Thinking of hiring a fire engine to come to our house for his birthday party and to surprise him and his friends. I understand from the internet that you can hire one for an hour and it will take 7 kids and one adult on a trip around the area.

Can anyone recommend such a thing and any useful hints and tips to ensure my son really enjoys his birthday treat

Yes thee is one near Chester which is a limo inside and he can go out in a ride in. Sure you'll. Find it if you google. It's something like flaming desire!
