What things would you do at a lego party?

Just thinking about my boys birthdays. They share a birthday and will be 6 and 8 in December. They both adore lego, so I thought it might be good to do a lego themed party, but am struggling with ideas. Can anyone help?

How about a lego building competition? Give each child the same set of bricks and time them making a car or house etc. Stick the moustache on a giant lego man (pin the tail on the donkey style)

Quite a good idea is to give them an empty party bag that they fill during the party by winning things/finding things. You could do a treasure hunt where everyone is looking for a particular lego man - give them a mug shot of the man (like hunt the thimble )that they can then take home.

I wouldn't get too worried about everything being lego related though. Lego invitations and a couple of 'lego' related games will be plenty!

I'll be watching this thread though to steal ideas for ds's birthday too

Making cars to race down a ramp seems good, but it will be made out of my boys lego, so I wouldn't want the children to keep them, that will be ok won't it?

I might have a look on ebay for some extra lego though....

Other ideas are 'guess how many lego pieces in the jar' downloading colouring pages from the lego website. I don't want to spend loads and loads of money, but can afford a reasonable amount because it is a joint party.

Oh no the lego building competition is just for fun, none of the things have to be taken home but with the treasure hunt type thing it's just a way to give prizes and then not have to pay for a separate party bag on top of that. Colouring would be a good quieten down activity. My best piece of advice would be not to have too many children! Have tescos got any deals on lego kits or anything like that? these are on sale at the lego shop. Oooh, lego is fab

could you divide up the lego into equal piles and give each pile to a team and then get the to build the tallest / widest / fastest thing with what they've got

And Cathy, brilliant! they have loads of different types too, so can get girly ones as well! Would be good for treasure hunt and can form part of the party bag!

oh i think all you really need to do is empty as much lego as possible onto the floor and let them get on with it!!!

I did a Lego party for DS1 earlier this year. I bought them one of those little sets - Creator? - that make 3 different styles of car/plane/train each. Those were the 'party bags'. As children arrived we opened them and they constructed their own thing (slower than I anticipated, actually).

We played pass the parcel with a Lego stationery set as the prize. We played pin the hat on the Lego policeman, expertly drawn by DH. We played Don't eat Tommy smartie.

Then I served pizza and ice cream. We sang Happy Birthday over a Lego-shaped cake, and then they all went home!

Oh how much fun would that be - tallest / best / most creative building with a given amount of bricks (so they all win a prize for something IYSWIM), Lego brick cake, lego car racing, where's wally with lego (a card with pictures of bricks they have to find in a big pile) - and then frisk them for bricks before giving each a mini set in lieu of party bag.

Could you try ebay for collections of random bricks to builk out your supplies? Or even freecycle, come to that - I bet loads of people have discarded lego collections which are not worth selling and which might be donated to such a good cause.

stealth, frisking them may be necessary! I like the wheres wally type game! And freecycle is a great idea!

Just spoke to DH about this and he is getting very enthusiastic about it, as am I!

Well, we had a Playmobil themed party when ds was 8 (don't laugh stealthsquiggle), so I don't see why you can't do the same with Lego.

We played pass the parcel (you can put a Lego prize, and a small minifigure in each layer).

Dress the Playmo/Lego man (ds drew a picture of Norman the Foreman, we printed 2 of them and drew and cut out paper clothes, each team threw the dice and could add an item of clothing when they threw a 6, first team to dress man wins)

Pin the something or other on the Lego man/woman. (We had pin the teacup on Norman the Foreman)

Hunt the minifigure - hide minifigures round the room, whoever finds most wins the prize.

Drawing in the dark. This game can only be done of the party is late enough in the day. Sit everyone round a table, give them all pencil and paper, then turn lights off. Tell them all, bit by bit a (Lego-themed) scene to draw. then put lights on and laugh at everyone's pictures.

Ooh now I'd love a playmobil one, but the boys love lego now, so alas I can't! Drawing in the dark sounds excellent! They'd love that!

I managed to get about 20 mini lego sets off eBay to give as favours, costing less than £1 each. This was 5 years ago, but still worth a try I reckon. I think I searched using "bulk lego" or similar.

I've just bid on some of those little figure sets you can get now...probably not enough ofthem, but they were a good price so fingers crossed!

Don't eat Tommy Smartie:

Get kids to sit in a circle. Take one kid out of the room. While she/he is out you pour a few smarties out onto a plate and get a child to choose one to be "Tommy Smartie". Bring child back into the room. Let him start eating smarties until he lifts "Tommy Smartie" when all the kids have to shout out loudly "DON'T EAT TOMMY SMARTIE!!!".

That's it. They love it. They all want to have a turn. They don't even get to eat many smarties if you just put a few on the plate each time. And because they all want a turn it takes AGES. Seriously, everyone should try it. I'm so thankful to my lovely friend for reminding me of this game. (at our Ben 10 party I believe the smartie was named Ben!). It was a 6 year old boy party (though friend did it at a 5 year old boy party).

I made these lego cupcakes for DS1 to take into school on his birthday. His friend were v. impressed.
