We had a BBQ at the weekend for DDs birthdays. I invited various relations and DD1 was allowed to choose 3 friends. We know the families and all get along. One family turned up got on well with everyone had a great time. of the others mum and DD came for one hour only before saying they had to go to see friends as her DD was and i quote 'the star attraction'! The other family did not turn up at all and gave a lame excuse (forgot) later - i had sent a text saying DD very excited and looking forward to seeing in the morning before the BBQ. my concern was DD was really looking forward to playing with them all together..
Well. today (actual bday) various friends agreed to join us at local soft play. The same 'no show' friend cancelled at the last minute and other turned up 2 1/4 hours later than we suggested 1 1/4 hours than she said she would. DD this time was distracted by other friends but cant help feeling really annoyed with them - again no excuse and seemed to think we should DD should be overjoyed to see them. WWYD?

I think that you have to find a diplomatic way of explaining to your dd (how old is she btw) that some people do let you down and it is better just to get on and enjoy yourself regardless. :) Perhaps don't invite this particular friend to specific things again if she is unreliable.

How old is your DD? How disappointed was she at the bbq? Cos if she had a good time without the others, then thats a good thing - and a big learning curve for you - just invite the real friends who you know you can trust to turn up. Its prob more disappointing for you, I hate people failing to turn up, or giving last minute crappy excuses. Yes sometimes things happen, but if it was all a bit vague, I would stick to those you know best.

Thanks for your comments..she DD4 did have a good time but did ask a few times for this particular friend Sad. Its a shame as I thought they were all good friends of the family and DD4 is starting school with this girl as one of the few in her class that she knows which is why i invited them to both things...
