Birthday cake or cupcakes for guests

I have now been to a few parties here and have noted that the parents present the birthday cake at the party so the birthday girl or boy can blow out the candles. Cake is then taken away and the kids get a cupcake when they leave. Is this how it is usually done in the UK?

no cake is manically sliced up and wrapped in napkins for the parents to eat in the car when they get outside

Not normally, all the kiddies parties I have been to they get a slice of birthday cake wrapped up in a napkin to take home in the party bag.

round here cake is usually hacked up and served immediately

That sometimes happens here.
Makes it easier to sort out cos you can already have the cupcakes ready to go so if you are busy at the party you do not need to madly cut cake!
