Have you bought extra insurance for kids going to uni?

Having just dropped my daughter and a carful of stuff at her new uni halls I'm wondering how safe everything will be? Should I be buying extra insurance for all her stuff at the new address? If she lost her phone or dropped her laptop those would be a nightmare to replace, perhaps just buying special cover just for those items? What have others done?

You should be able to find out what the inclusive insurance covers on the website.

Your own policy may cover it. Please check the wording before you purchase any more insurance.

Our house insurance covers it in halls of residence but not in private accommodation.

My DD bought insurance through Endsleigh who had policies designed for students and the sort of cover they needed.

I used Endsleigh in 1981. Pleased they are still going!

They weren't cheap but they seemed to understand the sort of levels and gadgets needed!

Sorry to resurrect a thread but has anyone recent experience of insurance for shared student houses? My youngest is proposing to rent a house with 7 friends and I’m struggling to get any information from the comparison sites. Just wanting a rough idea of which providers to try, and what sort of cost to expect. I’d like to cover it separately from our own policy.

Urban Jungle were very good when my DD had to change her policy mid year. I think she still uses then since leaving uni.

GellerYeller · 17/05/2026 14:11

I’m grateful as my eldest was in halls so this is all new territory!

Please call your house insurance first as bound to be cheaper! I think ours cost about £12 for they year to add on to our contents insurance .
