Daughter going to university. Did not the accommodation she wanted so is going to commute. She has been given the max amount of student finance . Is it ok for her to put it away in a savings acct until she needs it,

If she applied for 'living away', and instead is 'living at home', she will have been awarded too much, and needs to contact Student Finance so they can adjust the amount. Not telling them would be fraudulent (not to mention that she'll be racking up interest on a bigger loan than she needs).

Definitely inform them.

The others are right, Student Finance England needs to be told so that they can award the slightly lower 'living in parental home' rate but, to answer your question, there's nothing to stop her putting her loan in a savings account and using it for whatever she wants, now or in the future.
