Still struggling with empty nest but also dreading them coming back for summer!

My last of three dcs moved out last September for university, and finally the nest was empty.
I admit it has been harder than I anticipated. I work f/t in a demanding position that is stressful and yet fulfilling. My relationship with DH is good, we've been through a lot over the past 20 something years and we look forward to this new stage of our lives.

I am still close to all DCs and in particular this dd as she's adjusted to uni life away from home.

And so despite all this I have been overcome at times with such sadness and sense of loss, even this week. It's not as bad as last year but I am so unsettled and lost at times.

And now I've realised in just over a month dd is coming back home for summer. She plans on moving with flatmates and working a lot so will be coming and going I guess, until she goes again for her second year. So am I going to experience the loss all over again? I'm dreading getting used to her back only for her to obviously have to go again. I feel pathetic.

Anyone else relate? Any tips or advice? It so unexpected to still feel like this.

I'm seeing my final one off in September too, and dreading it, although excited for him! My 2 dds are already at uni, and I love hearing about their lives, but like a pp said, it is never the same! Even when they come home (which happily is fairly frequently) it's never for long, they have so much going on! Dd2 hadn't been home in ages and was coming with her GF for a rare weekend. I cooked her favourite dinner, and was excited to see her....but they opted to stay out in town till 3 am instead! I felt a right idiot! (She still apparently ate and appreciated the dinner at 3am!)
They just get used to their own lives, and I wouldn't interfere with that, but I do miss our movie nights etc!
Nothing needy about it, like others I run my own business full time, have a good marriage and plenty friends. But my dc are still among my very favourite people to be with.

Yep I miss my work colleagues too, even the ones that used to annoy me before!! Lol

Yes i have a crazy Spaniel and helps a little bit to fill the hole

If its needy to miss your kids then its needy. I freely admit, I miss mine when they arent at home and they haven't moved out yet.

The run up is often worse than the actual event ime. Just try and concentrate on the positives. They're doing what they're supposed to be doing! And that's a good thing.
