My DS (23) is buying his first house with his girlfriend. They currently live in a flat together. I want to buy them some moving in presents. I'd like to focus on the boring stuff that you really hate spending your hard earned cash on - as I want useful and they'd find it quite funny. We're going to give them some cash as well so they can choose some big ticket items as we know they'd prefer to choose that sort of thing for themselves. What did you really need when you moved into your first house but hadn't thought to get for yourself?

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. I have been crocheting some cushions for their sofa which I know they will love, I'm going to get them a flat mop as they now have wooden floors that they didn't have before. I'm also making them up a first aid kit (as my son is always 'borrowing' my plasters and antiseptic). I'm also going to put together a starter kit for a 'junk draw', full of bits and pieces you need but would never think to get which I think will make them laugh :)

Depends how they live and what they enjoy doing. No good getting thoughtful kitchen items if they never cook for example. If already together they probably have most of what they need. I’d ask what they want and get good quality versions of it, eg good linen sheets and comfortable pillows it they need bedding.

For your "junk drawer" how about

Spirit level
Battery tester
Led torch
Matches
Candles
Tape measure
Safety pins

I haven't read the whole thread but if they have a garden how about a small tree to mark their move in ?
