Ideas and universal credit

Ds is 18 and just left school. He has a uni place for next year and the plan was to work to raise money. He gets PIP but this will be reassessed soon. He has mental illness and ASC. He has got nowhere with jobs - he has no work experience even volunteering due to missing school at times and the effort to catch up. He does not have any skills for real life but is not entitled to social care as he doesn't have a learning disability.
Will universal credit help? I've heard of the help to work stuff - could this be a way of accessing support? As well as some income.

I don't suppose there's any harm in trying to apply. How does he feel about applying?

Could he work in a local charity shop one day a week too to give him some work experience? That's what my DS did after Lockdown.
