How much to give Uni Student

Just wondering how much other people give their kids who are at Uni?

Student loan only covers rent and bills (just). We said they have to work part time to fund their beer money but we'd give them £50 per week to live off during term time.

Is that reasonable?

If that is supposed to cover food too it might be a bit tight. If not it's plenty.

I think the idea is parents to make the maintenance loan up to the max loan.

We have twin girls at Uni and £50 pw each was all we could afford. They said that they were the poorest of their friends but managed.
If they got desperate we used to boost their bank by £20 or so now and then.
They got jobs in a late bar the first year but couldn't the 2nd year as Uni work too hard. They've both in line for Firsts in Chemistry and Biology and work really hard. Bless them!
If you can only afford £50 they will survive but you'll have to pay train fares home etc. If you can afford a bit more the second year, when Uni work gets harder, I would! Hth!

My DS's both managed comfortably on £50 pw after rent and bills. They weren't hermits but equally didn't spend money on clothes, expensive phones etc.
It did work out that we made up their loans to the max, which is what you are expected to do.

Food for a single person is about £40-50 a week if a male who is eating lots.

What is included in what is paid for by the loan? Do they have an expensive sport or hobby they participate in? Are they in an expensive part of the country? Does their course have high costs such as study materials or transportation to placements?

I also think it depends what kind of degree they are doing. Some are demanding from the word go, and working isn't always sustainable!

It may be do able with £50 but be prepared to send them a top up if necessary.

I think that’s fair for food; would you help out with essential clothes? Like a coat, shoes for day to day and jeans etc otherwise I think they’d really struggle

My son is at Uni & as he has a full on course he works like stink in the holidays & then lives on the £250 pcm my ex gives him. He has almost full grant.

I top up when I can & usually do a big Aldi shop before he goes back after a visit. Lots of pasta & veggies. Learning to cook is a great money saver !

That's good advice from everyone.

I do pay for the running of the car, insurance , road tax etc. Also pay for the mobile phone and clothes etc so the £50 is for food only.

As you pay for his car and related costs, phone rental and clothes then £50 should be enough for his food and maybe some beers.
I think it's fine!
