Hi - I desperately need to have a tear-jerking soppy poem/lyrics for my baby son's card to his dad by tomorrow (as we're off on holiday). Does anyone have any good ideas please?? Song lyrics particularly welcome as I seem to have been through every poem I can find! many many thanks.

If you're religeous, there's this one:

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed, the patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing left to add,
He knew His materpiece was complete,
And so, he called it Dad.

That's lovely, abbysmum, I need something similar for my mum... preparing for her 60th. Not wanting to take over your thread Detta, hope you don't mind me asking.

Not sure the last line of this scans properly...

Here are my handprints
So tiny and small
The ones that clasped you hands Daddy
The ones on the wall.
Press them in your memories Daddy,
Press them in your heart
Never let go of me Daddy,
Never let us part.
Right now they're good for touching
And crawling on the floors
Hold them tightly in your hands Daddy
They fit so perfectly in yours.
Soon I'll be big like you,
Our hands will be the same
But you will always be my Daddy,
And I will always proudly carry your name

Footprints

"Walk a little slower daddy," said a child so small. "I'm following in your
footsteps and I don't want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast,
Sometimes they're hard to see;
So walk a little slower, Daddy,
For you are leading me.

Someday when I'm all grown up,
You're what I want to be;
Then I will have a little child
Who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,
And know that I was true;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy,
For I must follow you.

Well, they all made me cry. Not going to look any more now!

last year I helped to make the kiddies a card for their dad which said on the outside "we love you daddy" then on the inside " even though you are VERY grumpy"

Not sure if that is the spirit / tone you are after.

fio2 · 11/06/2003 06:50

like it jasper. The poems are all lovely but I cant imagine my dh being very impressed cos hes grumpy too.

How about this one, you could adapt it (eg hair colour etc)

Father and Son

In a grey chair
by the fire,
Slouches a man
with a boy,
Stretched contentedly
across his chest.
Eyes closed, mouths slightly parted
sleeping.
The boy's quiet breathing
almost drowned out,
by the man's ragged breath.
The boy's fair skin
and blond hair
Stand out against the man's
dark hair.
As the boy nestles closer,
Sighing,
softly,
wrapping tiny-dimpled hands
around a wind-burned neck.
The man's thick, work-worn hands
pull the boy closer.
Returning a hug neither
will remember
When they
wake-up.

Thanks very much everyone - decided on the "hand" one in the end. I'm sure it'll be appreciated!

These make me cry! But, I have had a brainwave... ~I am going to write the hands poem on a card and make clay handprints of ds (this idea is on another thread). What a fab present (I bought a big Toblerone but knew all along it was a bit boring). Thanks everybody, for inspiration.
