We did it when ds was 2.4. We'd taken his cot down to have his room replastered and it didn't seem worth putting it back up with the sides on. We never used bed rails and he got the hang of it in a few days. Now at 3.7 he has been in a full size single bed for 3 months.

Tonight.
Not really a bed, but one side taken off cot that he kicked the bars out a while back. We had turned it to the wall so he still had bars around him, but he jumps a lot, and the cot was bouncing rocking off the floor so much it registered on the richter scale and neighbours complained last night.

So tonight we have turned it with the open side out IYSWIM and put stairgate on his door.
Put him down to sleep tonight and he lasted, oooohhh, 1.3 seconds before he climbed out [grr].
I had to sit next to him til he fell asleep, still asleep thank god.

He is almost 21mo.

dd 2.7 went into her new single bed last night and it all went fine... a bit unsettled getting to sleep and a few cries in the night but did her usual 8pm-9.30am sleepathon. Instead of a bed guard I got these www.duskymoon.co.uk which had great novelty value for dd and ds (4.6) during story time!

spicemonster, I forgot to say that we also use a cot duvet widthways on an IKEA bed.

DD got a single bed with pretty bedding etc for her 2nd birthday.
(Didn't bother with the extra cost of cotbed/toddler bed)
