Ideas wanted for how to keep a toddler busy when newborn arrives

Baby number 2 will be arriving in a few weeks, and I'm trying to think of things that DS (2.5) will be able to do on his own while I'll be busy feeding, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions of particular toys or games that might work?

I'd never really seen an aquadraw before, but looked them up and they look fab. They have them at the ELC.

The bump and I are off to bed, thanks again for all the great suggestions!

Dang, that is BRILLIANT! Must get ds some for the plane! Where? Haven't seen anything like it anywhere I've been (though wouldn't have known what I was looking at, obviously!)

thanks littlelamb, goodnight Alberta and bump

ELC, Woolies, and our Boots do them too if you're after the points I stumbled upon them CHristmas 2 years ago and find myself buying new packs whenever we lose the pens which is annoyingly often (should invent a homing device)

phdlife · 21/11/2008 22:35

thank you so much littlelamb. have some cake

no no no silly woman, it's VIRTUAL cake. No calories!! You can eat the whole dang thing - with ice-cream

littlelamb · 21/11/2008 22:47

but phd there has been too much ''virtual'' cake!! Have been fooling myself that as I am bf I can still eat like a loon with no repercussions. My arse is testament to the fact that that is NOT the case. But hey, since you insist

phdlife · 21/11/2008 22:52

ah, then you probably don't want to know what happened to me when I was having that exact same issue...

If he likes books, and you arent that keen to introduce too much tv, check out the walker books series of books with a dvd of the story. The dvd is exactly the same as the animation/pictures in the book, and only runs for about 4 minutes. They are really good, particularly hooray for fish.

Let me guess- you were one of the annoying multitude for whom bf was like an instant diet and you dropped to size 6 in no time I am sooo fed up of saying 'o I just can't seem to lose any weight, I'm bf you know' and people replying, 'Oh, I thought it was meant to help'. Not in my case sadly. Was the same with dd, fed for 10 months without losing a pound but gaining a few and as soon as I stopped it just fell off. Woe is me and all that

phdlife · 21/11/2008 22:57

er, not quite (note thread date)

littlelamb · 21/11/2008 23:00

Lol! I have read that thread before I forgot it was you!! Congratulations. Sadly NO chance of that here. In fact, ll feels generous

phdlife · 21/11/2008 23:04

ha, that was what I thought!

you know, it's a great thing about virtual cake, the way the more you share, the more there is to go round.

gtg, if I don't stop MNing a while before bed my head is fully of mindless chatter witty repartee that keeps me awake. seeya round, ll

and apologies to AlbertaWildRose for totally marmalising her thread. have some cake

Ditto what funnypeculiar said. I got a load of cheap little things (e.g. stuff for party bags from Tescos - balloons, whistles, general tat, a few mini packs of choc buttons) and wrapped up each tiny thing (very roughly) and chucked them all in a big pillowcase. When I needed to keep DD occupied for a bit I'd let her do a lucky dip. A lot of the pleasure was in the unwrapping. It was a godsend at times though.
