I've got some questions about reusable nappies...

... and wonder if the wise mumsnetters can help me out!

I've been reading loads (including past threads) over the last couple of days and have a few questions which I haven't found answers to:

  1. I've settled on motherease or tots bots in terms of make, but which would be better, given that my db is unlikely to be over 8lb at birth? Would tots bots be too bulky for a newborn?

  2. Did you use reusables from the word go or take a pack of disposables into hospital with you? (think I might wimp out of taking reusables...)

  3. Reusable wipes - if you made your own where did you buy the material from (and what material would you recommend)?

  4. Best place to buy from?

  5. Any other bits of equipment needed for using reusables?

Answers to any of these questions much appreciated!! TIA.

ring your local council - many of them give a grant of £30 or so towards cloth nappies.

They may also know if there is a local "nappichino" - a local meeting group that talks bout cloth nappies and sells second hand ones - sounds about as interesing as watching paint dry but can be really useful if you want to get some different opinions and ideas.

Hi again, power was off when I eventually got back last night (you know how these meetings take forever!)
I did have one packet of disposibles for the first few days then,
I used prefolds for the first few weeks, much cheaper than newborn shaped nappies, and I now use them in my stuffables.
Then moved on to meos during the day as they are slightly slimmer with airflow wraps, and tots bots with a fleece wrap at night,
you can use the size 2 nippa tots from quite early if you dont mind the bulky look.
We also have a few fuzzi bunz and minki stuffables for when we are out and about.
I have cut up a metre of terry for my wipes and just sewn the edges.most fabric shops sell terry.
we use a spray bottle with water and baby bath, seems to work.
Q4, would be me.
I got my nappy bucket from a DIY shop in FW,
Will give you a ring to arrange getting my bag to you.(no obligations, just good to get to feel them)

bensmum re Q4!

Dh is absolutely sold on totsbots now, can I get them through you?

I also have another question to ask of everyone - out of all those who use totsbots, no-one mentions using their wraps - is there something I should know?

Of course, could maybe even try for a discount!
I do have a tots wrap in my demo bag, not a newborn, but it might give you an idea of what they are like.
I personally didn't get a good fit with tot's wraps and use airflow as they have poppers and are very adjustable,
I do however use the tots red and spotty fleece wraps at night and love them.
I would suggest you don't invest in a huge number of one type of nappy before baby is born and you've tried them out,are you thinking of using size 1 or 2 ?

Miaou -- we use TB nappies and a mixture of TB and ME wraps. Thenappylady recommended ME but I've seen no real difference in effecacy (both are great). DH prefers the TB wraps though but can't really explain why.

Miaou · 11/03/2005 21:15

bensmum, I'm all up for a discount!

We're going to go for size 1, on the basis that neither dd1 or dd2 were big (6lb130z and 7lb1oz), and we can sell them on when we're finished. Also they are not likely to be tall which seems to be an issue.

We're keen to buy some soon (next month) so that we can spread our costs ( a lot to buy between now and July )

Miaou, I will give you a ring , my demo bag is with the midwives on the mainland at the moment, so I may be able to arrange for your dh to pick it up for you to look through.

Miaou · 13/03/2005 19:58

Fab bensmum, will wait to hear from you!

Sorry - hijacking... how do you get to be a nappy demonstrator person?

bensmum3 · 14/03/2005 09:02

Hi, If you look at the nappynetworks.htm they have a list of local nappy networks, I phoned the scottish real nappy network and they provide leaflets and other resources to help. If you want to sell nappies I could give you a link to become an agent, probably best to CAT me.
