My boys will be 5,need to book now, don't know party etiquette once they start school.

Am aware as the 1st party of the year people will then feel pressured to do a whole class thing too. Personally I don't feel the need to invite the whole class but don't know if that is just what happens.

Also only 10 boys in the class of 30 do I invite all 10 so none of the boys will be left out????????

Heeeeeelp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

book for 20 and give invites out at beg of term they wont all be able to make it

It dpeends what you can afford/wnat to do.

When DD was that age it was customary to invite everyone but you could get a church hall for next to nothing and a party entertainer for about £65-70, unlimited kids. So a party for 20-30 kids for about £100 inc food and maybe plus a bit for a mini Mars and a book from the Book People in the party bag!

Party entertainer charges have gone through the roof since htough, IME/O.

I came back from two terms out of the country with DD as she went into reception and it was lovely to be invited to a birthday party because the boy's mum had decided to invite everyone in the class and had our details from the previous year's contact list (which I'd put together!).

Interesting one this as DD1 birthday is at the beginning of September and she will have only been at school for 5 half days before her party. I am not going to invite the class - I already have about 25 on the list from nursery (most who she has known for the last 4/5 years) and also non nursery friends. Adding a new class onto this would make it unmanageable. That said about 6 of the class will be coming anyway as they are currently at dd1's nursery.

Thanks for that- a few of the kids are from s different pre-school don't know if I have the heart not to invite them but will all the other mums be silently cursing?????

I'd invite them all , chances are there will be a clash somewhere anyway and some won't go to a party of someone they don't know yet. Definitely at least invite all the boys.

HandbagAddiction · 08/07/2008 21:39

Wouldn't have thought so as it will be so early in the new term. I for exmaple would not get upset about dd1 not getting a party invite....

Tommy · 08/07/2008 21:40

I wouldn't - it might ake other parents think they have to invite whole class too.

I would just ask your DSs who they would like to invite - a mixture of friends. You have plenty of time to get into the "class party" thing

MilaMae · 08/07/2008 21:41

Just worried they'll all feel they HAVE to do the same.

It's so tricky with the boy/girl ration and the kids not previously known to the school(their pre-school feeds the school).

I could try Sue's idea of a cheap entertainer-if I could find one

invite who he knows.

smartiejake · 08/07/2008 21:43

We had this with dd as her birthday is on 7th September. We delayed her party for a few weeks (had it on the 22nd)as didn't know many children or parents and invited them all but as there were two intakes there were only 18 in the class at the time.

MilaMae · 08/07/2008 21:44

How about all the boys and the girls that they know/play with/would like to invite????

Also I could find out who else is in the same position and ask what they're doing.
