a cardboard box

some bubble wrap

an old tube or pot filled with rice and sealed.

No need to spend money on a 1 year old.

A ball or some bricks. DS got a box of wooden bricks for his 1st birthday and has had loads of fun out of them for over 2 years.

Some Duplo? Ds has a box and loves emptying it all out, makes a good noise, then throwing it all back in, then emptying it all out....etc etc Will last years as well, my niece who is 4 still plays with hers.

what does he like? we got ds a sandpit for his 1st (huuuugely popular tho all he does is transfer sand all over the garden, quite sociable when other toddlers come round). and as he was obssessed at the time with putting things into boxes and taking them out again, got him a noah's ark toy with lots of animals to (endlessly) put in and take out again. he also has a ride-on trike someone else bought in but doesnt seem very interested in it.
