DD worried about lack of puberty

My DD is in Y7 and is worried about the fact that she hasn't started puberty. Apparently she feels jealous of her friends who are suddenly taller and have breasts etc.
She has mentioned this a couple of times, and this morning said she wasn't looking forward to swimming at school because she would have to get changed and wear a costume which would be embarrassing.
She is only in Y7 and whilst I can see myself that some of the kids are growing up fast, I haven't been able to reassure her.
I suspect that in a few years she will regret not being so little any more, but for now she really wants to catch up. I don't quite know what to say. I remember feeling similar when I was her age. I was quite a later developer and I don't know if this runs in the genes or what (her dad tells me he was quite early).
Any tips to reassure her/me?

I was 14 and so was my DD. Try and reassure your DD that it will happen when her body is ready.

Does she have a type bra top when they are changing? I was a very late developer and was still in vests for years hated it. Don’t think they did them years ago I am 70now. Sure they did Junior bras but wasn’t allowed them as I had nothing to put in!

When you say no sign of puberty, what exactly do you mean? If she's got zero breast buds and zero sign of any hair growth, body odor or changing body shape, I personally would be considering taking her to a gp if that is still the case by the time she's 12.

Nothing at all. She is only 11y 3mo, to be fair. I think I was the same. Didn't start my periods til I was nearly 15.

This is concerning. She needs to see her GP

Really? She's only just turned 11. She is not the shortest in her class, nor is she the only one who still looks young. If she was 14 then maybe but I wasn't worried at all before. I was just concerned that she felt jealous!

I don't think it's that unusual, a lot more girls are starting earlier but that doesn't make just past 11 execessively late. I didn't need a crop top until I was about 13 and started period at 14 and a half

I don't think at this point GP is nessarcary .My male relative did not enter pubity tho and it has had life long consequences as he did not deal with it until his late 20's (different generation long ago) Just keep a eye on it .

I don’t think it’s unusual either. Could you buy her a swim suit with some padded bits in so she feels less uncomfortable? Although I’m sure all girls at that age boobs or not would feel the same.

MagicUser1 · 28/09/2026 11:42

I don't think at 11 I'd be rushing to GP, no. But as she moves closer to 12 if there's no change, I would consider at least having a chat.

No body odor? No change at all to body shape?
I do think this is at the quite extreme end of normal- although still normal- and would consider a trip to the Dr too.
