Advice appreciated from military families - what exposure/level of explanation is appropriate for "what daddy does"

My DS has just turned 6. DH is in the military.

Im interested in other military families perspective on what information you share with kids and whats appropriate at what age.

DH is from a family with military people in multiple generations so hes pretty desensitised to it all.

I want to strike a balance of my little guy having an awareness and pride in what his daddy does, but also not stealing him of his innocence or normalising guns etc before hes at an age he can understand the context.

I grew up in a Forces family.
My earliest recollection of being talked toabout what daddy's job is was "the main thing we do is make sure there aren't going to be any more wars" which obviously became less and less credible as there still are wars, but in principle it was an explanation that worked without glamorising fighting. I have a later memory of my dad saying something like if you have to start fighting, something has gone wrong. If you do everything right, the fight doesn't start in fhe first place.

Not a military family, but used to teach children from military families. In school, I always went with: just like the police protect our local area, the army protects the whole country and the navy the whole sea and the air force all the skies. Obviously the fighting element will become more of an issue as he gets older (some children were terrified about this, some glamourised it) but while he's little I'd focus on all the other things, lots of training to be strong and healthy etc.

Thanks. DH has shared a video of him doing close quarters firearms drills on the range and said DS would find it cool if im happy to share it. Hes seen a few old photos of DH doing operational stuff, sat on tanks etc.
I think a live amo video is too much for a 6 year old. 😬
Like hes too young to understand its practice for something fairly rare and might think its something thats likely to crop up in our neighbourhood.

Its prompted me to have a proper chat and agree some guidelines on whats appropriate so I appreciate others perspective.
