What age should we remove the bed guard? DC is 6 and we still use it

DC moves a lot during the night and we still use the bed guard (other side is by the wall). We didn’t have one on holiday and she fell once but then was ok the other nights (we also put cushions and blankets on the floor). Should we just get on with it and remove it or should we wait a bit longer?

Does she have additional needs op?

We never had a guard after about 2yrs, they both went into double beds once the cot bed was redundant.

2ish 😂

Ours went into beds at 2 but we never used bed guards because I thought it would make it more difficult for them to get up and use the toilet in the night.

If she's out of nappies at night, doesn't she ever need to get up and go to the toilet?

I think 6 is quite old for this, tbh, I'd remove it and see how she gets on. You haven't got that long before sleepovers, bunk beds on Brownie trips etc.

My 6 year old still has his as he falls out otherwise (single bed). He almost wiggled around it and fell out anyway once!

bababamama · 09/09/2026 15:49

Mine never had one from getting a single bed at 3

Not something we ever used, from when they came out of the cot around 21m - 2 yrs.
ds used to fall out of bed a lot..
When he was small, I scooped him up and put him back in when we went up to bed, but when he got bigger, I'd just pull his quilt down on top of him.

Meand2Ls · 09/09/2026 16:06

Just before he was 3

Never once used one.

DD (5) has been in her mid-sleeper since 4. It’s lowish.. tiny little ladder. She inherited it from DS who graduated to a double bed.

From about 2/3 for both of ours. The same time they came out of their toddler cot and went into big beds. We did lay a mattress/pillows/blankets next to the bed in case they fell out. I think in total they fell out 4/5 times each.

Topseyt123 · 09/09/2026 16:14

We only used a guard rail on the top bed of bunk beds. Not on the lower bunk at all and not when using a single bed either.

I used to just spread a few cushions along the floor at the side of the bed in case they rolled out, which was pretty rare.

They all finished with the cot at about 2 years old.

Whenever she wants it removed.
