Using omeprazole and probiotics together for a 7-week-old with silent reflux

Hi, my 7 week old is on 4mg dose of omeprazole for silent reflux. Only on day 4 and I’ve heard it can take 2 weeks so I’m not looking for immediate improvement. However I just wanted to know if anyone has their child on omeprazole and a probiotic at the same time and if that’s ok to do? I will ask pharmacist as well but just wondering if any mums have experience of this. My LO struggles with trapped wind too so thought it might not hurt giving it a go as well to try and make them happier. 🫠 Thanks!

Hey!
Gosh I remember how worrying all that time felt.
I don't think there's any problem with omeprazole and probiotics.
I remember my GP saying omeprazole had side effects so it was kind of a weigh up of gains Vs losses and we ended up not using it - I drove myself mad with 'is it silent reflux or just a baby'.

My LO was on various meds including omeprazole and probiotic so I can’t 100% remember if it was those two that were the problem but I think it was and we had to give one in the morning and one in the evening because they interacted (and that would mean the omep was less effective). We didn’t have any issues doing it this way.

That’s exactly what I’m going through! Starting to think maybe she’s just a grumpy baby. Hopefully it’s just a newborn phase and she becomes happier as she grows…..

I literally cannot put into words how much bloody easier it is when they can talk.

If i were you I'd give the omeprazole the two weeks just to see what happens, and if no change maybe stop it.

Is he bottle fed or breast and have they talked about cmpa or anything? Xx

Yes I think I’ll only do for 2 weeks just to see. Breast fed which is why I was given omeprazole instead of gaviscon as apparently that needs to be put in a bottle.
I have thought about cmpa. I’d rather not cut out things as it’s such a faff but obviously will if needed. I saw a lactation consultant who said it wasn’t an allergy but I suppose how would she know…
im just so hopeful that it’s something that will be grown out of sooner rather than later!

We went down the cmpa route and it wasnt, it seems to be massively massively over'diagnosed'

I hope you're ok and LO settles soon xx

My son had complete milk protein allergy and that includes human milk. Also reflux alongside this. What you eat contributes to how your child is so whether it’s a faff or whatever you need to either remove all things from your diet that could be causing issues or put the baby on formula for milk protein allergy. Often it’s non ige allergy which means it isn’t testable in the usual way but basically you have to work it out yourself with trial and error.

are you giving the baby the omeprazole in tablet form or liquid? The liquid also has added ingredients in that can upset the stomach so if you get the tablet version and put it into a neurofen syringe and suck water into the syringe and move gently - no shaking - to dissolve - then as soon as it’s dissolved give to baby.

what is meant to be given alongside the omerprazole is domperidone as they work together. Unless your baby has been tested and needs probiotics then I wouldn’t advise giving them as you can disrupt the flora of the bowel etc and actually cause more problems than it solves.

when the baby is older and starts eating then give them lemon slices as lemon turns to alkaline when it gets into the body and neutralises the acid. My son still puts lemon juice on his food now many years later and hasn’t “grown out” of his mp allergy and reflux - as that is a nonsense they don’t grow out of it instead it usually becomes silent and their behaviour is often the thing that is affected due to their reflux etc which ends up appearing to be silent /not bothering them but with correct investigation and treatment then the behavioural issues that result from this are sorted out once the condition is treated

@Nearly50omg God I wish I'd known you when mine were tiny. That's more help than any doctor or professional gave me!
