Would a clip-on reading light be suitable for my seven-year-old?

DD is almost 7 years old and has shown an interest in reading. She shares a bunk bed with DS who is 4 years old (DD on the top bunk). They go to bed at the same time as DS struggles fall asleep without her in the room. I feel DD should be staying up a bit later but thought maybe I could get her one of those lamps that clip onto the side of the bed so she can stay up and read a little? Would this be bad for her eyes? I don't really want to keep her up downstairs as she finds it difficult to switch off and will bounce around getting emotional because she's tired and struggling to wind down.

My kids had them and loved them!

You could also consider some sort of wall light maybe? My friend has some that are wireless - you screw them into the wall but the bit that lights up comes off and gets recharged.

Yes that makes sense.

Do be a little cautious setting up one child's routine to placate the other child. They are not a parent and shouldn't feel responsible. If your 7 year old needs the sleep and wind down time ignore this completely.

We did this when my dc shared a room with bunks. It worked perfectly!

Moved to kindle after that, which IMO is even better.

Depending on the books she’s reading would a kindle be better? I never got on with a clip on light. I’d rather read with a torch than one of the little clips. Even the cheapest Kindle is lit these days and it’s not lit like a phone screen.

A little light like that would be fine but some of them can be quite bright especially the white LED so try and look for warm white at least. You should really start to look at separate bed times too. It’s not fair to make your 7 year old go to bed earlier than needed for the sake of her younger sibling it can only go on so long before it builds resentment.

Sounds fine or some kind of light that clips to the side of her bed so she doesn’t have to hold it and the book.

My DD used a light that attached to her book. We took her shopping for a lamp but she preferd her book light. She got the first light aged 11ish. She had to finally replace it aged 18!

There are little reading lights that sit around your neck, which look really good and give more option for lighting the page than the clip on lights. Not sure how to add a link, but this is an example! musthaveideas.co.uk/products/book-beam

Thanks for the tips everyone, that's really helpful! Just to say that DD struggles to wind down at bedtime so imo she needs to go to bed a bit earlier to mitigate for that. She will keep playing games, won't sit still etc so if she is in bed then she is kind of forced to calm her body and mind down. I don't send her to bed on account of DS not being able to fall asleep without her.

She hasn't asked to stay up later, this my own idea for her and I also want her to enjoy reading for herself and to allow her a bit of "independence" to turn off her light when it is time for her to go to sleep.

Think I will look into the light that sits on the book as she has some sensory issues so wearing a light wouldn't work and too bright would also be a problem.
