What should I expect? How have others gone on? Should I let them have it?

Of course you should get it for your child.

both my children have it every year. As do I. After permanently losing my hearing the last time I had flu and being very ill for 3 weeks I don’t want to go through that again

Why wouldn't you let him have the vaccine? Do you want him to have flu and pass around everyone he meets?

Yes, they should have the nasal flu vaccine.

It's given because flu is a horrendous illness that circulates every winter, and thousands of kids will end up in hospital due to it every winter.

Flu strains change every year, so the vaccine is changed every year to include the most active strains that year, so it's important to get it every year.

It takes 2 seconds to give, it's just a little squirt up each nostril. It's not painful, and it's a hell of a lot easier than having a seriously unwell child.

i am by no means against vaccinations! My child has had them all but I have heard conflicting results about the flu one that’s all and they are my first child so that’s why I’m asking. Thankyou!

I don’t see why you wouldn’t have it and why you would be asking an online forum if you had actual concerns about the flu vaccine.

Flu is more dangerous to small children than COVID. My toddler will get the vaccine this year if eligible.

What conflicting results have you heard? There are always going to be a very small minority of kids and people who will have a negative effect from a vaccine or medication. But for the VAST majority of kids, the flu vaccine is of great benefit to them and prevents them being severely unwell. Mine have always had it, they've had a bit of a cold afterwards but much preferable to full blown flu.

Flu is a dangerous illness and can make people seriously unwell. Given how strapped for cash the NHS is, they wouldn't roll out a flu vaccine for children if it wasn't in their benefit.

We get the shot, not the nasal spray. You can’t get the spray if you have asthma or are around immune compromised people, both of which have been true for dd since that age (though of course at 3 it was just strongly suspected asthma).

the controversy is because they take a guess at the prevailing strains each year and some years guess better than others. Even when they get it wrong, the shot still offers protection. If you get a different strain, odds are you won’t get as sick as without the vaccine.

Get vaccinated if you can. The actual flu is awful. If your child has any underlying conditions it can be terrifying.

(You also will be helping protect other people in the community. I know your child doesn’t have to be a shield for other people, it’s just a bonus.)

We all have flu vaccines every year. The kids have the nasal spray once they are 2 (we paid for the injectable version before age 2). I would rather an injection myself but my kids don't mind the nasal spray at all.

I pay the £25 every year to get the flu vaccine because I’ve had the flu twice (at 21 and 27) and both the times got hospitalised and the first one took me 7 weeks to fully recover from. The fact that my children get it free every year until they finish school is absolutely amazing and I will be taking full advantage.

I don’t bother with it for my child or myself.
