Nine-month-old crying all night with teething, when to call NHS 24?

9 month old hasnt stopped crying all night. Literally. We think he has slept for maybe 2.5 hours upright on one of us.

We think its to do with front teeth coming through as they are right there and a wee bit blood in his saliva on bed sheets.

Have tried calpol and nurofen but he is refusing it, also tried anbesol and teether etc.

Is there a point where we say this cryingbisnt normal and go to minor injuries/nhs 24? Have done a top to toe check and nothing else obvious

i would persist in trying to get some calpol into him. With no other concerns (normal temp, eating and drinking normally, normal wet and dirty nappies) I wouldn not call 111 for this.

So if he’s refusing call/nurofen then it sounds like he’s had no medicine pain relief? Try gently swaddling him, in a semi-upright position, and squirt small amounts of Calpol or Nurofen on an inside cheek. Do this repeatedly until all the medicine has been swallowed.

If you Google NHS giving medicine to babies safely it will basically tell you the above.

I hate to say it but I really had to restrain DD to get calpol into her when she was little. Is his temperature ok?

Yeah no temp, will try swaddling. He seems to struggle with bottle but is managing water out a big boy flask with rubber spout just now.

Use a syringe for the calpol. Even if a bit goes elsewhere a 9-month old is not strong enough to entirely resist taking it.

How is your little one today? COVID made my then stuff month old inconsolable, we ended up in A&E but partly because it led to Exorcist-level projectile vomiting.

Out of hours GP would generally see a baby that's been screaming that long for a check over.

If he's spoonfed and you're struggling to get Calpol into him, can try measuring out the Calpol using the syringe and squirting it into a spoon and spoonfeeding it to him? My daughter hates a syringe but will take it with a spoon so it's worth a go!

Buy paracetamol and nurofen suppositories online. They're expensive, but everyone getting sleep is worth it. They're easy to insert, your baby won't feel it, and they work wonders
