Is it fine to keep bottles for milk at nap and bedtime?

My nearly 13 month old is now going onto whole milk. She will normally have a bottle for nap time and bed time at night, with a mam bottle size 3 teat. I just know if I transition her to a sippy cup for milk at nap time she will not settle. She has a sippy cup in the day for water but her milk is more of a calming thing for her and helps her to sleep. Am I okay to keep her on the mam bottles for milk at nap and bed time with a mam bottle?

I would move in the direction of transitioning over. They really will take milk in a cup just fine once they get used to it. We used a straw cup so very similar sucking mechanism. I’d move one bottle at a time, so it’s not too much all at once.

You’ll get there. You say she won’t settle but you’d be surprised.

I think ours still had milk in a bottle at bed time when they were 3 😬

Ours too. We stopped when he toilet trained and the milk was meaning he woke in the night for a wee.

He’s 10 now and a distant memory, he got there in the end. We did brush teeth after milk though.

Mine had milk in a bottle until 2, we always brushed thoroughly afterwards and it hasn't made any difference at all!

You should be trying to brush teeth after milk by that age. Are they eating plenty of food? As too much milk can impair appetite. They will settle otherwise, it’ll just be an adjustment.

13 months is still tiny so no immediate rush but it isn’t great for teeth especially if the bottle comes after teeth brushing. I’d probably start by ditching the nap one. Does she ever sleep on the go? Give her a filling lunch then take her out in the pram or car maybe. Once you’ve managed that you’ll probably feel more confident about ditching the bedtime one too.

Sleep times are the worst time to be having milk in a bottle really, I'd try to stop it personally.

Was this whole milk or formula?

Whole milk.

They’re early 20s now. No filings or teeth issues.

Whoops75 · 07/08/2026 22:48

We kept occasional comfort bottles until toilet training. Whole milk for the good eater and formula for the poor eater.

PeonyBulb · 07/08/2026 22:53

You have to brush their teeth last thing at night especially after milk or they will get tooth decay. I don’t think it matters either way if it’s a bottle or sippy cup tbh just brush those teeth.

As soon as I stopped the bottle of milk they refused from the sippy cup so bottles AND milk stopped overnight which wasn’t great as they wouldn’t drink milk ever again from anything and still won’t.
