Changing a baby’s name within 12 months: registry office or deed poll?

Has anyone changed their child’s name under 12 months with the registry office and not deed poll? I was told I only needed to do it with registry office as child was under 12 months however now I have tried to change with HMRC and was told on the phone I need a deed poll? If anyone has completed this change successfully please advise!

We did it when DS was 10mo and needed deed poll - might have changed but at the time you could only do it as registry office for under 6mo. Deed poll is so easy - download a form, get two witnesses (do a few copies), and done. You don’t need to register it anywhere either, just start using it.

No, I changed his name when he was three months old. He responds to his new name.
