My 3 1/2 year-old son seems to be going through some sort of development leap, whereby he is extremely destructive at home and very well behaved when I take him out, he also has a crazy amount of energy these days. I’m trying to think of ideas for how I can fill our summer and help him release some energy. It would be good to introduce him to different activities. Our local football club has stopped over the summer until September. Looked into karate but they don’t start until age 5. He’s likely too young to begin tennis classes or a musical instrument, I have also looked into nature school and he is too young!

Help! (And thanks in advance!)

I'm taking my very active toddler for a gymnastics taster class tomorrow. Some local leisure centres do classes, there Little Gym and Gym Finity. They also do Ninja Warrior classes. They might do intensive week long camps (they do round by us). Trampolining might be an option but often they start at age 5 - though I used to teach Baby Bounce from 1 year.

Lots and lots of swimming, classes if you can find them or just take him in.

Have a look at your local council, I know it’s very area dependent but mine has amazing stuff over the summer, all free.

All types of dance are good, for getting them moving and also for musicality and listening to instructions.

I remember being desperate about what to do with 4 small children in the summer, and the only thing that worked was to put together a ‘lucky dip’ of activities and the children would take turns choosing from a bag at the start of the day. It was great fun.

Summer is great to go to different nature reserves (they have pond dipping sessions sometimes), and visiting different forests and outdoor swimming pools (and lidos). I used to go swing crawling (it was our thing) and looked to find different swing areas in villages around our area. Splash pads were great (if there is no hosepipe ban in your area). I used to take them to the skate park with a scooter at that age too (smallest slopes with knee and elbow protection).

Gymnastics clubs also sometimes offer stay and play sessions during the summer, they are great fun.

I also noticed a lot of adverts for outdoor films in the park, that looked great for a 3 year old.

Sports centres, libraries, museums abd National Trust places all often put on stuff for kids over the summer.
