Is 6.30am too early for young children to play in the garden?

It is light early in the morning and young children often wake early. The weather is warm at the moment so being outside in the garden in the early morning can be attractive to some people. However, if you had a young child wake early would you have them out in the garen playing at 6.30am, bearing in mind that young children aren’t often able to play quietly and keep their voices down? Also, would you raise your own voice to join in their play and interact with them at that time or do you think it is too early to let them into the garden? If so, what time do you think is acceptable?

Far too early. 8am at the very earliest.

PurpleThistle7 · 24/06/2026 07:26

We called our kids in at 730 - told them to be quiet outside, they failed and so they had to come in. We took my son and his friends to the park for a bit. Usually we aim for 8 on weekdays, 9 on weekends.

Don’t be so miserable. With the heat it’s better to be out early.

When mine were little, I would take them to the park to play if they woke up early at the weekend. I was very aware of the noise they made because my neighbours didn’t have children.

Yiayoula · 24/06/2026 07:30

It wouldn’t bother me at all , much better to get some fresh air whilst it’s (relatively) cool.

Generally I’d say it was too early and shouldn’t be out before 8am but this week I think anything goes. Likely to be too hot later and we are all awake anyway.

No we are not all awake. Not everyone is unable to sleep!

MaryBeardsShoes · 24/06/2026 07:33

Of course it’s too early to be disturbing your neighbours! There’s no way your kids will keep their voices down! Wtf!

PetiteParakeet · 24/06/2026 07:35

I wouldn’t mind and in this weather I doubt many people are sleeping in anyway

More likely they’ve struggled to get to sleep / woken up in the night, but by 6.30 when it’s cooler they are probably fast asleep. So If they don’t have to get up at that time they may not like being woken up early as well as having a rubbish night!

Normally I would say no. With the weather as it is this week I would have no issue with it as long as they weren’t being over noisy.

I agree. It is cooler then.

PullTheBricksDown · 24/06/2026 07:38

During the heatwave, fine. Otherwise wait till 8am.

Growlybear83 · 24/06/2026 07:38

It’s FAR too early. I don’t think anyone should be doing anything to disturb their neighbours before 8 am during the week or 9 am at weekends. I would be furious if I was woken up by screaming children at 6.30!

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2026 07:38

Yes 6.30 is too early for noisy play.

Lentilcakes · 24/06/2026 07:38

Yes it’s far too early. That’s what CBeebies is for. Or set up play inside til 8.

muddyford · 24/06/2026 07:39

Take them to the park.

PuppyMonkey · 24/06/2026 07:39

I think in these exceptional circumstances I wouldn’t mind kids, lawn mowers or anything at that time, just while it’s so ridiculously hot later. I got woken up at 5.55am by the bin lorry yesterday and I completely understood.

Leopardspota · 24/06/2026 07:42

Our bin men shout at 6am, trucks reverse and beep…! I think 630/7 at the moment is fine. Usually more 7-8 is appropriate. But each to their own! It’s hard having little kids stuck in the house.

noshade · 24/06/2026 07:43

Normally I'd say that's too early but I'd cut them some slack when there's a red weather warning for heat. If you're somewhere nice and cool that changes things though!

Getbackinthebox · 24/06/2026 07:44

They added childrens party music and barking dogs to the mix by 7.15 am. And it’s noones birthday as far as I know - just a typical day for them. I was asleep with the window open until they woke me up so wasn’t happy! The problem is young children don’t temper the volume of their voices so they don’t potter quietly in the garden. Unfortunately the mother has a loud voice too, even at 6.30 in the garden so she doesn’t model quiet behaviour to the children either.

In this kind of weather it’s quite sensible

with things being warm and basically getting warmer over the coming years we have to adapt

EmeraldSakara · 24/06/2026 07:44

6.30am is far too early.

dizzydizzydizzy · 24/06/2026 07:45

EatingHealthy · 24/06/2026 07:15

With the current weather (assuming you're somewhere like me that is getting daily highs of mid-30s+), and mid-week I'd say let them out and wouldn't have a problem with neighbours doing so. (I don't have children myself). I would expect parents not to be making a lot of noise but wouldn't have a problem with kids making happy playing noise as long as it wasn't too excessive.

I agree with this.

In normal weather; 8am on a weekday.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 24/06/2026 07:45

Yes, far too early.

In this weather I think it’s fine.
