13 month old waking up 20 minutes after bedtime

My 13 month old baby is waking up crying every night after 20 minutes of being put down for bed. She’s done this for the past few months and I can’t figure out why or how to help stop it from happening. I read that she could be overtired or undertired so I tried to make sure she was neither of these. But it doesn’t matter she still wakes up every night after 20 minutes. Has anyone else had this? And did anything help?
Thank you! X

What happens next, is she awake long?

They all do this. Grow out of it after a while. You just have to resettle with minimal fuss and make it clear you’re not going in for a long drawn out thing

Mine did this whenever they were overtired e.g. if bedtime was slightly too late or they'd had too long for their last wake window or skipped a nap.

Can you bring bedtime 15-30min earlier for a couple of weeks and see if it helps?

So when she wakes up I usually pick her up and give her a cuddle and most of the time she will settle and go back to sleep after 5 or 10 minutes. It just seems to have gone on for maybe the past 4 months or so and I can’t seem to stop it from happening.
thanks everyone, maybe it is just something I need to ride out. I know it won’t last forever but I sit tense every night waiting for her to start crying! Xx

Think that's normal, it's just settling down.

Yes i suggest you ride it out. We had it with both of ours and it stopped around 18 months or earlier

Withthe2Ls · 03/06/2026 21:45

both of mine done this until they learned to put themselves to sleep. About the 11 month mark for my son but about the 18 mark for my daughter

I do this myself. I go to sleep with the radio on so I know how long I have been asleep.

BabyFever64722 · 04/06/2026 10:44

Mine did this from about 14 months until about 18/19 months. Drove me nuts. It made me so on edge. Nothing I did improved it, he just decided to sleep one night.
