Toddler unsettled the day after nursery, overstimulated or still overtired?

My 14 month old goes to nursery Monday and Wednesdays and has done since he was about 10 months. He's settled well there and seems to enjoy it. The problem is the day after nursery he's a complete nightmare crying and whingy pretty much all day and nothing distracts him like it normally does. He'll need convincing to eat and even this doesn't settle him which food usually does!
He has just transitioned to 1 nap and has a little cat nap for 10 mins in the morning to get him through to midday so he is on the same schedule as nursery as he wakes up at 5am no matter what we do! This seems to work well now when he's not at nursery. At nursery he tends to nap at midday for an hour and a half and is fine when we collect him at 5pm although often a bit tired. We often put him to bed a bit earlier than usual at half 6 -7pm depending how tired he seems. Usual bedtime is 7-7:30pm. He sleeps the full night until his usual wake up of 5am!
The day after nursery he's a nightmare, not sure if it's because he's been so overstimulated there or if he's still tired or what!
Are we doing anything wrong? Any ideas to help?

It just sounds like overtiredness. My children are much older yet still spend all of Friday evening and Saturday in a grump after a tiring week at school. Maybe just try to take it into account and plan to keep the day after nursery calm and not too busy.

That's not a lot of sleep even on a good day it's not even 12 hours.

That's not a lot of sleep even on a good day it's not even 12 hours.

Trust me we would love him to sleep longer but he won't we've had bedtime varying from as early as 6pm to as late as 8pm and continued each for 2-4 weeks each to give him time to settle and he still wakes early no matter what and max he has every napped is 2 hours during the day despite the same routine, pitch black room and cot, white noise etc. He's never been a good sleeper but we've worked hard and he sleeps independently overnight and settled himself really well. Usually when he's with us he has about 10 hours good sleep overnight and 2 hours during the day and is completely fine so I think he just has low sleep needs, apparently I was similar! His current routine is the best he sleeps really.
When it's school holidays and he's not at nursery we have no issues so it's definitely nursery whether it's tiredness or overstimulating.
He's only getting half an hour less than normal at nursery really and we put him to bed early to try to compensate but not sure what more we can do. When they tried 2 naps at nursery he barely slept for 10 mins each bless him haha! He doesn't want to miss anything I think!
