What water should I use for formula in Portugal?

Heading to Portugal in 2 weeks with bottle fed 6 month old and confusing myself about what water to use.

The nhs advice is not to use mineral water - but does that count when boiling it?

Am I better to boil the tap water or boil mineral water?

Fairly sure I boiled tap when I went

Most mineral water is too high in salt, can you take ready mixed?

I would check but in Spain the mineral water you can use for formula has a picture of a bottle on the side of it.

in Europe they don’t boil the water for formula as they use a certain brand of bottle water that is safe for babies.

i have no idea why this is considered safe as the powder is not sterilised. However when I travelled with a bottle fed baby I used the ready made. I brought some and bought more when I was there as I was just to concerned about the risk. Their water is really unsafe for babies even if boiling.

Evian is fine. No need to boil at 6 months

LittleMxPerfect · 27/04/2026 22:42

Yes I think Evian is the brand to use, but yes always use boiled water in formula. There is no age when this stops

This is incorrect Formula always need boiled water added to it to sterilise the powder.
