What do your 4 year olds enjoy playing with in the garden?

What sort of toys do your 4 year olds enjoy playing with in the garden? Looking to make it more interesting for her at times when we are at home. We currently have a sand and water table but don’t know if she will get bored of those soon or if we will get another years worth of use. We also have a mud kitchen which needs assembling. Any other ideas?

Unless your four year old is very advanced it's unfair of you to expect them to assemble a mud kitchen.

Depends on the size of course, but mine just riding their balance bikes round and round and round.

Love the mud kitchen and still like the sand box thing.

We have a tuff tray too which is multifunctional!

They are 3&4 and interest has not slowed down at all.

Sand pit got a lot of use here. A portable easel.
Playhouse was cute but barely used. Too many spiders and snail poo.
Little watering cans for helping in the garden.
My garden is too small for swings/trampoline etc.

Bubble machine! Just got one for my niece for when she comes to visit.

We have a trampoline, slide, basketball hoop, bike, scooter, balls. Really she just likes the dustpan and brush to be honest

Swing ball, croquet, boules sets. Wants a throwing sandbags game thing but I haven’t bought one yet. People seem to have those blow up bouncy castles when we go for play dates, they love them, but we don’t have one

Trampoline
Paddling pool with one of those baby slides going into it

Yes, the dustpan and brush is an elite toy in our house too!

I've got a 5yo who's favourite garden toy is those bamboo canes for supporting plants.

Zingandzoom · 23/03/2026 20:42

My 4yo (and 2yo) quite like their football, goal, cones - usually for making assault courses, frisbee and mini gardening tools.

But they mainly enjoy playing with mud and sticks or getting a plastic tub out and filling it with water and sticks and petals and grass.

Ah yes. Making potions!

Giant chalks if you have slabs

BestZebbie · 23/03/2026 23:13

Most of the above but we also got a big bag of chunky coloured tumblestones once old enough to be trusted not to put them in a mouth, we seeded a pebble/gravel path down the side of the house with them and spent about a week gradually searching and discovering more and more, then playing with them in the sandpit and arranging them etc.
If you have a wheelbarrow then that is the perfect height to fill with soapy water for bubble play (or gellibaff!) to keep the paddling pool for plain water.

Mostly the mud kitchen and sand pit, watering can, ball games, bubbles, garden chalks. She has spotted her brothers old swing ball in the garage and is keen for DH to fix it and get it set up so I'm hoping that will be a hit for her this summer. She has asked for a slide for her birthday.

Watering can and the stones that run along our back wall. Hours of fun with that.

They have a boat sandpit, ride on digger, mud kitchen, massive slide, water table in the good months, all sorts of miniature gardening tools like a broom and a rake but they always go back to the poxy watering can and stones.

Tennis ball on a string on a stick
