Thank you cards for new baby gifts - when did you ACTUALLY send them

DS was born mid october and between newborn/older child juggle, christmas and flu season im only just sending them now. My mum is horrified and says its so embarrassing. Ive text and thanked EVERYONE (bar one who is genuinely forgot as was ill).

Is it really that bad? How do people find time to sit and write all these cards?!

With DC1 I think it was about two months.

@Thewonderfuleveryday oops might need to get my finger out 🙈

It wouldn't even cross my mind to expect a thank you for a baby gift tbh. New parents are already busy.
I remember they made me so stressed trying to get them done.

Id just send a message and thank the person you’ve skipped and consider it a job done. You don’t need to send a formal thank you card; just make sure you’ve thanked people for the gifts which you’ve done. Anecdotally most of my friends just sent a text saying thanks for the gifts.

Iocanepowder · 12/02/2026 03:39

I never sent cards either time. I had 2 c sections and both my kids had reflux and never slept.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/02/2026 07:30

DC1 was Sept born, DC2 was Oct. Thank yous went in Christmas cards both times.

EmpressaurusKitty · 12/02/2026 07:35

I’ve only ever received texts as thank yous for new baby gifts & I’ve been absolutely fine with that, given what the parents must be going through.

Rainraingoawaydontcomeback · 12/02/2026 08:05

I got slated on here when I said I didn’t because I had been really poorly - readmitted to hospital and just avoided ICU followed by months of recovering while looking after a high needs babg. Apparently that wasn’t enough of a reason to only send a text measage and photo of baby in the cute outfit if that was the gift.

EmpressaurusKitty · 12/02/2026 08:11

That’s VVVU.

I crochet blankets for new babies & love it when I get texted a photo of the baby using the blanket. A card would be unnecessary.

LilyCanna · 12/02/2026 08:26

I think sending thank you cards for gifts is unusual nowadays. Either a thank you in person when you open it or a quick text is fine. Especially with a new baby!
Elite level thanks is a cute photo of baby wearing the clothes / next to the cuddly toy or whatever.

NeedSleepNowww · 12/02/2026 08:29

Around 4/5 months.

The first few months were intense with both of mine - recovering from c sections, reflux, hospital stays, hours of purple crying. Only when things settled down did I think about life admin.

I mean DH could obviously have done it sooner but he preferred my handwriting 🙄

MidnightPatrol · 12/02/2026 08:29

Take your time.

IMO it is not fair to be demanding of thank you cards from already overwhelmed new parents.

StormyLandCloud · 12/02/2026 08:36

I’d probably send a round robin style letter with a few pix and brief update and a thank you for cards and gifts

Mine was an October baby too and I put a birth announcement card in with Christmas cards with a short thank you note on the back. Some of them didn't get posted until January.

mindutopia · 12/02/2026 11:43

Never send thank you cards. Just a text. I’ve got enough to do.
