Does anyone's baby sleep in a pram (at night)?

My mother tells me that in her day newborn babies used to sleep in their prams (presumably a bassinet type pram) until they were big enough for a cot. She says it was quite easy, as you would walk the pram up and down until baby fell asleep (instead of carrying baby like I did for hours with ds1). As I have to get a new pram and maybe a bassinet for dc2, I was wondering if this could work. Has anyone done it? Is it considered safe?

yes it is the same as a carrycot

if it is a proper pram

not a shaped buggy pram thing

Yes, mine slept in her M&P carrycot and then her Silver cross humungous affair. Slept fine in both. Agree with zippi - needs to be a proper carrycot with mattress.

We had a carrycot pram and the carrycot bit could come off.

DD(PFB) was always transferred to her crib - even though she slept better in the carrycot.

DS slept in the carrycot until 4 months when I put him in a cot.

We had a good mattress for it and IMO no different to a moses basket, just more easily portable

I don't really think it matters what the baby sleeps in, but where. Would you put the pram in your room? If you lived in a flat, that could be quite manageable, but obviously not if you had to go upstairs. Also, you would have a problem when they outgrew the pram - they may then find the cot hard to adapt to.

I am presuming you are talking about night time sleeping. If you are wondering about day time naps, I don't think it's that big a deal. I used to leave mine in the pram if they'd nodded off in there

DD had a moses basket when she was born but when i left Xp i left it behind.
she ended up sleeping in her pram and she slept much better in that than she ever did in her basket.

My babies used to sleep in all sorts of things and places. dd2 spent most nights in her car seat, aged a month or two old. It was the only place she seemed to want to sleep in. She hasn't been permanently deformed by it. IMO, if they're asleep, who cares where or how?

It sounds like a great idea until you get caught in the rain and come home with a soaking wet pram and nowhere dry to put the baby to sleep...

A moses basket on a rocking stand isn't expensive.

Having said that, dd slept in the carrycot when we were away from home (sometimes on the chassis, sometimes not) till she was about 6m - much better than a travel cot.

My eldest slept in her pram at night until she was 6 months or so. We lived in a flat so no problem with stairs.

Proper pras/carrycots are very cosy, all 3 of mine slept v well in theirs.

Thanks for replies! that was faster than I expected. I borrowed a bassinet for ds1, and I liked being able to move it from room to room - we've a one level house. I would have the pram in the bedroom at night. SoupKitchen and Habbibu, did you buy a proper matress or was the original one good enough? I'm quite jealous Habbibu. I'd never heard of silver crosses (ignorant colonial me) until I read that thread. I looked them up and they're gorgeous. I'm not likely to come across one though (or afford it if I did...). Now I'm really going to bed...

We just bought a pram mattress ( about £15) and bunged that in.

Mine slept in her Stokke Xplory until she was about 3 1/2 months old and outgrew the carrycot bit. It was fabulous, some of the best money I've ever spent. Whenever she started snurtling away I could whizz her out into the sitting room, then settle her after her feed and wheel her back in fast asleep.

I have a Silver Cross Classic Sleepover pram. It has a rocking stand that the chassis clips on to for night time and during the day at home. My 3 month old daughter loves sleeping in it, and it was worth buying just for the ease of being able to reach over the bed and rock it at night! I live in a maisonette with 2 flights of stairs, so although I now have very strong arm muscles from lugging it up and down the stairs, it is totally worth it!

Hi need some advice my baby turned 2 in December just gone we have always used a pram to settle him at night and then move him to his bed he's now starting to wake up at night for his pram I can't stop him from going in it or wanting to use it. Can anyone help please

DD slept in carrycot until 4.5 months. I got given it with a legs base to clip it to so not on actual pram base.
