How old were they when they changed? Was it a gradual thing or one day they were brown?

It was a gradual thing with both my ds's.
Their eyes just got gradually darker & darker & were fully brown by around 6 months.
Their eyes started off a dark blue colour at birth.

from birth

pinksofa · 21/01/2005 13:24

blue at birth had changed by about 6 or 7 months - they were a lovely mid blue, they are now a lovely dark green brown colour

tweetyfish · 21/01/2005 13:27

DS (2.5y)has the most gorgeous blue eyes (like his dad ) and I'm watching DD's (2m)eyes hoping they stay the same - I guess I'll have to wait a while before I know for sure! I never realised (rather stupidly in hindsight) that babies are sometimes born with brown eyes!

Dd1's eyes are green (were blue at birth), dd2's eyes are dark brown (were navy blue at birth and became completely brown by 6 months)

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2005 13:30

ds's were always dark, if you looked v closely dark blue for a few weeks at most, then since then always brown...and beautiful

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2005 13:31

my eyes were blue until 5, then green until about 11 and now are browny green depending on the light, i think it can take years until true eye colour arrives...like hair colour..sorry i don't mean 'true' I mean the colour you end up with as an adult iyswim

galaxy · 21/01/2005 13:32

dd's were brown from birth and so were ds's.

SoupDragon · 21/01/2005 16:09

I think they changed at about 18 months. They were the bog-standard dark blue baby colour and then suddenly they were brown.

lunavix · 21/01/2005 16:10

DS's were dark blue for like a week and then dark brown

Slinky · 21/01/2005 16:13

All 3 were "brown-eyed" from birth - now they are very dark "chocolate" brown, can barely see the pupils - which is the same as me.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but what if the babies aren't white?
I am due with twins, and dp is Indian. Are Asian babies usually born with brown eyes, or can they also be born with blue then change?

My eldest has blue eyes & the other 3 have brown. All were born with blue eyes, but we knew the boys' would change because they were much darker & a different blue- like slate.

I always understood it was "impossible" for eyes to be actually brown at birth... obviously not if a lot of posters babies were born with brown eyes. Then again I couldn't actually get any of my babies to open their eyes properly in the light in that first week to be able to see what colour they were... perhaps this is why some appear to have had brown since birth? (just a theory ) Any geneticists know the answer?

happymerryberries · 22/01/2005 11:35

Tamum is the person to ask. My understanding is that eye colour is geneticaly determined, if you have a brown eye gene you can make the brown eye colour. You also need nerves to stimulate the eye so that the colour can be made. I assume that some children are born with that nervous stumulation already happening, most have to have this nervous connection develop. This is all after Tamum explained why some people have different coloured eyes...thatwoman is a MN treasure!

From birth for both my boys - mind you I'd have been shocked if they'd have had blue eyes as they're mixed race

RTKangaMummy · 22/01/2005 13:47

DS were sapphire blue and then they are now the deepest chocolate brown

DS was very prem btw. So cant remember exactly when they changed

But they are the most georgeous dark brown now

iota · 22/01/2005 14:04

Just been checking the photos to make sure - yes ds2 had brown eyes from birth - ds1 has blue eyes, I have blue eyes, dh has brown eyes.

Ds2's eyes are a darker brown than dh

Cristina7 · 31/01/2005 13:13

My son's eyes were blue at birth, changed to grey, then green-brown around 9 months or so. They are beautiful.
