Moving DS to new bedroom for new baby - when?

Im 28 weeks pregnant with DS2, have a DS 18 months. DS currently sleeps in the smallest room, but we plan to move him to our spare room and give baby the smallest room, as he needs more space.

Ideally this room needs plastering new carpet etc but I’m struggling to organise it all before new baby arrives.

What would be the best plan here? Would you move DS out of his room before the new baby comes? I’m conscious of not making him feel pushed out of his current bedroom and him having too many changes at once, but it means upheaval in the future when we decorate.

Baby shouldn’t be in their own room until at least 6 months old anyway so you’ve got ages. Gradually work on getting the spare room replastered and carpeted, decorated nicely for DS and then at some point before baby is 6 months old, move him into his new room, you could do “sleepovers” in his new room to begin with to get him used to it.

Yeah I think PP has a good plan there. I wouldn't feel in a rush to move him into the other room just yet as long as you don't do it right around the time the baby is born. We kept our DC1 and DC2 in our room until 16 and 18 months so we had loads of time anyway. We moved DC1 from the smallest bedroom i think about 6 months before we moved DC2 into it. So DC2 was about 1 then. It also meant DC2 could have naps in their new room for awhile before they went into it properly as well. That being said I've got bigger age gaps so that probably made it easier too.

I'm 36 weeks with DC2 and DC1 is just over 2. We're not moving his room but I'd to do it sooner rather than later to give them time to get used to it before another big change happens with baby sibling. We were going to wait untill later this month to move DC1 from cot to a bed but I'm glad we did it earlier as it's a big change and took a week or so for him to settle

Baby will be in with you for a time. Get the plastering done, carpet, decorating. Then involve eldest in the choice of decor etc. make him feel involved.

He'll look forward to moving then.

DS was with us for 6 months so I know we will have time after baby is born, although his current room is tiny so not much room for the baby clothes etc which is another consideration! I’m not sure if 10 weeks is pushing it a bit on prepping a whole room though…
