'Baby race' stress has hit me again!

I swore I wouldn't do this second time round, but here I am once again on Mumsnet after lots of comments from family and friends about my baby's development 🙃.

DD2 is 8 months old and is showing absolutely no inclination whatsoever to crawl. She just loves sitting, watching the world go by (and her bonkers big sister!). My eldest DD was crawling by this age and I maybe naively thought DD2 would be earlier, if not the same, as her.

I've fallen in to the trap of comparing her to my friends little ones - who are the same age (and one younger) and crawling. One is even pulling themselves up and cruising furniture!! There's been a few comments now from family and friends about DD2 and why she may not be crawling yet. Trying to let them go in one ear and out the other!!

So, when did your babies start crawling??

They all get there in their own time, I should know better - my eldest didn't walk until 18 months and never sits still any more!! She turned 4 this week - the time has flown! Thanks for all the lovely comments ❤️ I wish people would think before commenting/comparing babies! I watched Bluey with my daughter this morning and the Baby Race episode came on - had another little cry at it (that show gets me every time 🥹)

My second baby was 10 months and I think that's quite normal. My first never crawled, she bum-shuffled at 11 months, she was a late walker too at 18 months and now she's older still finds sport a bit of a challenge but she talked early and is very intelligent.

My LO started crawling 2 weeks ago - 2 days before she turned 10 months.

Some people need to be careful what they wish for. An 'advanced' dc isn't an advantage ime..
My dgc walked unaided at 7 months. He was a nightmare..

xWildFlowerx · 06/07/2025 07:18

DS1 8 months (walked at 12 months), DS2 7 months (walked at 11 months) and DD at 11/9 months (walked at 15/13 months, she was 2 months premature so corrected age she crawled at 9 months).

It's perfectly normal to not crawl at 8 months, some babies never do. One of my sisters just shuffled with one leg under her bum and moved around that way, she never crawled!

readingismycardio · 06/07/2025 07:23

DS crawled and pulled himself up at 7 months and walked unassisted at 14 mo (!!), whereas me as a baby/toddler I never crawled and fully walking at 12 mo. Don’t worry and don’t compare!

when i told his dr he was crawling she said “that’s great, it’s a 10 mo milestone”.

QuartzIlikeit · 06/07/2025 07:28

DC3 didn't starting crawling until after they'd turned 1. Didn't walk until 16 months.

Now age 7 they won the running race at sports day, plays competitive sport (involves a lot of running!) & is found most days running & jumping around as is never still.

I couldn't tell you when what age any of their friends could crawl, walk etc - they are all 7 & it doesn't matter.

Honestly, don't stress as it all works out at then end!

Is she spending lots of time on the floor? That’s how they learn to crawl? Or are you inadvertently keeping her in the bouncer so she doesn’t get trampled by her sister?

RedRobyn24 · 06/07/2025 07:37

My eldest didn’t start crawling until 9 months and even then it was an army crawl, which is basically dragging yourself across the floor without lifting your tummy up, she also rolled and pivoted her body to get around.

I do agree that you have nothing to worry about but also are you giving your little on plenty of time on the floor? Are you avoiding using bouncers /bumbo seat / jumperoo ? Are you doing tummy time together?

I agree with this. The brain of a 7 month old but walking sounds insanely difficult!!

To answer some questions that have come up, we don't own a bouncer or bumbo style seat. She spends all her time on the floor really - we do lots of tummy time but her preference is being sat up. She gets very annoyed being on her front - probably stems from her reflux, she suffered pretty badly with it until we started solids. But she does lots and lots of tummy time and has plenty of opportunity! I'm sure it'll come eventually, or maybe not and we'll just go straight to walking! My sister also never crawled and just bum shuffled.

Selfishly I want her to start crawling soon 😅 I personally found that once my eldest was crawling I felt less pressure to always be entertaining her/she was able to get things for herself and not wail at me for every toy she wanted!!
