10 day old baby suddenly not as calm

We have a six year old and a 10 day old. I’m struggling to remember a timeline of our eldest newborn phase. I thought we had got lucky with our newborn as he’s been calm and sleepy so far but tonight he’s been fussing and crying whenever he is awake. My MIL said that newborns “wake up” after a week or so but I thought if they were going to fuss they would do it right from the start?

can anyone with a newborn who was fussy or had colic tell me when it started for them? Thank you

In the throws of this at the moment and it started on week three. We're now on week nine. Hopefully it's just a one off for you!

I am a peadiatrician and I'd say your MIL is right. Peaks around 6-9 weeks then they become more settled again.

There's no rules for this stage, but yes very newborns can be very sleepy and calm and not really aware that they are out of the womb for a few days. The important thing you'll remember from 6 years ago is that whatever is happening, it's just a phase, it will get ... different. Try to chill and remember that your baby crying is not a criticism of your parenting capacity. Babies cry, it's ok, you will work it out.
