What cup to offer milk in at 12 months?

Hi all!

We had our 12 month HV review today (DD is 11.5 months) and she mentioned how we need to move onto cows milk at 12 months and off bottles. DD currently has a 6oz bottle of formula in the morning and 5oz bottle in the evening.

She said we should use a valve-less sippy cup (like the tommee tippee ones) before eventually an open cup as this is best for teeth. DD currently happily drinks her water out of a TumTum straw cup but apparently these are not ok for warm milk. I have tried her on the tommee tippee cups but she's not super keen and I fear will reject milk in them! An open cup just gets flung across the room currently haha

Can anyone share how they transitioned off bottles and what cups they used for warm milk? What was your process? I'm just rather baffled!

Thanks!!!

Just keep offering the sippy cups.

How many bottles is she having a day? I know the advice is about moving away from bottles at 12 months but my LO breastfed sporadically until 18 months but always had a bottle of cows milk at night. We did this til they were 2 and then started using the munchkin 360 cup (doesn't spill!) - just said it was a special big boy cup as they could understand that by that age and they happily transitioned onto it. I feel it would have been alot harder at a younger age and felt only having one bottle a day probably wasn't the worst for their teeth realistically.

@lenalove who said they’re not ok for warm milk? We always used TumTum cups with DS (now 4yo) at that stage 🤷🏻‍♀️
Keep practicing with the open cups too. We used a Doidy cup with water at meal times from about 7/8months 😊

We use the simple Tommee Tippee ones as I found them easiest to clean and can go through the dishwasher. The nursery DD started at 12 months also used them. Cups used for milk are much more prone to getting mouldy than cups used for water. We like the TumTum ones too but only use them for water as they are harder to clean properly.

We didn’t stop bottles at 12 months on the dot but probably a few months later. We did make sure we were brushing teeth after bottle rather than before though.

Just use an open cup. It takes some teaching in the early days (reminding them to hold it with both hands, putting it down gently) but my eldest refused a sippy cup too and this was fairly straightforward. He now asks for a sippy cup aged 3, fickle as they are.

Does she go to nursery? Because they will use sippy cups there so it is good practice to be able to manage one. DD2 just turned 1 last week. I've switched her onto cows milk in her bottle to start with (disguise the difference 😅) and that has gone really well. Then I'm going to switch the morning bottle to a cup first, then when shes settled on that, switch the evening bottle. We had lots and lots of feeding problems, including a SALT referral for a while as a baby, so I don't want to do a cold turkey switch too quickly. HV is fine with that. DD1 on the other basically went straight to sippy cup and was fine from the start.
