10 week old in significant pain during and after feeds with excessive pain passing wind

our 10 week old is really struggling with pain around feeding. He is formula fed on cow and gate. We have tried infacol, dentinox, Carobel, gaviscon and none of these have made much difference. He doesn’t have any real issues with being sick but is constantly breaking wind and this is very painful for him. This happens more during his bottle and also wakes him at night. He tends to poo once in 24-30 hours and this is clay like and he’s in pain while doing so. We pace feed him in an upright position and wind him for at least 30 mins post feed.

Any ideas or tips to help him?

Yes. Try a hydrolysed formula - they break down the milk proteins. It’s common for lots of babies (both of mine did) to have intolerance to milk. You can go for a medical one like Nutramigen (in theory needs prescription and I used for my first child, but you can actually buy it online) or you go for one slightly less hydrolysed like Hipp Comfort (I think it’s only 85 percent instead of 90 percent hydrolysed but that was enough to be a game changer for my second baby). Available at Ocado and elsewhere and cheaper than Nutramigen.

For clarity, an intolerance is not the same as an allergy, it’s just their gut is under developed and so they usually grow out of the issue at about 7-8 months. At that point you do the “milk ladder” which you can find online to make sure they are ok with milk now.
