20 month old waking up but still tired and mood affected

Advice please!

First time mum to 20 month old. Always been an amazing sleeper never had problem with night time sleep but need advice in regards to wake up issue.

Goes to bed at 6:45pm - most often asleep within 30 mins except for sometimes takes longer (even though tired and could be overtired etc from nursery days).

It’s factual that when he wakes up 7am onwards his mood is v happy and looks well slept and no issues, however anytime before 7am for example 6:30am he wakes up not particularly happy and spends most of the morning rubbing eyes and wanting to go back to sleep. I don’t understand how some days can be post 7am and other days wakes up when still tired so own worst enemy?

I’m not doing anything particular on these days and his daytime nap is varies from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours but normally 1.5 - 2 hours. It makes the mornings so draining and it upsets me when I know how happy he can be if he just sleeps for sometimes even 20 mins extra.

I fully appreciate we’re not all morning people so please refrain from replies along this line (!) I’m genuinely wondering if there’s anything I’m missing which is affecting his wake up. I have no problem with him waking at 6:30am if he’s well rested as I’m a morning person! It’s the fact he’s still tired and spends all morning wanting to sleep.

thank you and please nice helpful comments only :)

Does he sleep worse at night if he's had the longer or shorter nap?

No it’s completely random or so it appears to be? Today he woke up at 7:30 and ofc mood was happy not tired and well rested! I made sure he had no longer than 2 hours day time sleep yesterday so maybe I watch this more closely.

I always noticed with my little one that if he had a crap nap then his night sleep was awful. So maybe see if he's worse after a shorter nap or longer one. Mine only started sleeping through at 15 months so I sympathise

It's usually because they are over tired, so will actually sleep better after the longer naps.
