My 3.5 year Old says he wants To go home

My 3.5 year old lately has been saying he wants to go home. ( when we are home)
the first time he said it I kinda of laughed with him, as I thought he just got a little confused..
but it’s happening alot lately. We ask where is home. he says I want to go home. I go in a Aeroplane to go home.
it is now making me feel sad that he feels this way, or am I not understanding what he is requesting.
sometimes we ask is Daddy coming home too or is Mummy and Baby? Sometimes he says yes and sometimes he says no just his name is going home.

Wonder if it is a book he has heard read to him or something on television

bottlemom · 29/01/2025 11:21

Has he seen something about going on holiday in a plane and it's the plane he wants to go on to go on holiday?

SoftandQuiet · 29/01/2025 11:21

Has he ever been on a plane?

Has anything changed in his life recently? It might be his way of saying he misses how things were before.

rainbowstardrops · 29/01/2025 11:23

It's a bit woo but have you asked him who is 'at home'?

HPandthelastwish · 29/01/2025 11:24

I'd be sticking him in a cardboard box Infront of a TV screen with a sky video playing and roleplay it.

You shouldn't be feeling sad over something he doesn't have the vocabulary to express properly. Could be a book / show, could be he wants to see an airplane so you could do a visit to a nearby one if close enough to watch the planes land.

2825Tt · 29/01/2025 11:25

yes He has been on a couple of holidays with planes.

thank you yeah could have been something he has watched also

At this age they can sound like they have great vocabulary and understanding but in fact they are still in early stages of speech so tenses, nouns etc get confused so he probably doesn't mean what it sounds like he means.

Nebulosity · 29/01/2025 11:31

Is your baby very young? When I brought my baby daughter home, my 4 year old son, who’d been excited in the hospital, suddenly got sad and said “it doesn’t feel like home anymore.” Everything had changed for him and he had to get used to it (which didn’t take long).

2825Tt · 29/01/2025 11:31

I haven’t asked him who is at home but that is a good question I will do that as well.
it’s only been asked are we coming too.
thank you for a good question

Could be something he has seen on tv. When my son was a bit older than yours he watched the episode of waffle the wonder dog where the little girl has a video call with her biological father who lived in America. My son kept asking if he could video call his "real dad" and I had to keep explaining to him that he lived with his dad and he didn't have another one.

2825Tt · 29/01/2025 11:35

He will be 4 in May,
he has a brother who just turned 2.
they also have a very strong bond together( they for sure have there moments too though lol)

My 2 year old says "I wanna go a home!"
She means she wants to go on a walk. As, when we're on a walk, I say should we go home now?
However it took me multiple tantrums when I didn't understand what she was asking before I figured it out.

Jonnycakes · 29/01/2025 12:07

Does he spend time with grandparents? Could they often refer to their house as home- for example if they’re out saying “let’s go home” when they mean to their house? Just wondering if it’s someone else’s home and he wants to visit?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/01/2025 12:09

Ask him to draw a picture of home.

I bet it's a holiday he remembers having a lot of fun on or something

I think it’s this. Like a preschooler version of “home is where the heart is” he wants everything to just be.

2825Tt · 29/01/2025 12:10

I’m glad you found your answer. Though in the end. For him it’s later in the afternoons it starts then when in bed getting ready for sleep time.

This is another grate Idea thank you.
it’s possible we did go on a holiday to visit my sister and had lots of fun at play parks and zoos and water parks and more. So I will try this tomorrow thank you so much

@2825Tt My DC (now a teen) used to say this a lot when he was 4/5/6 years old. It was always when he was internally and sometimes outwardly very upset. He’s ND and “home” has always been his safe space. He would say he wants to go home (when we were at home) when he was struggling with worries or upset at something.

It was his way of saying, he needed to feel safe and secure.

2825Tt · 29/01/2025 12:17

the only change lately was same daycare centre, but moved class level up.
so this might be something for me to think about too thank you

Mine of a bit younger keeps asking if I will take them to Summer. (I agree, good idea). Maybe he has misunderstood the word Home somehow and thinks it's a place.
