I've done it several times, today being the latest! 🤦‍♀️😂

I was regularly sent in to school on inset days. Both my parents were teachers. One worked at my school.

bakewellbride · 06/01/2025 14:30

I did a mini version of this today. School was back on for my eldest then I went racing over to my youngest's toddler group and it was not back on yet! Had to just explain to dd then drive home again

Oh FFS it's do bloody annoying when they stick them on the end of a holiday. I wouldn't worry OP X

I think Julia from Motherland did this! Oops!!

I started rewatching Motherland recently and it's in the Pilot. Hilariously only perhaps not so hilarious if it's actually happening to you.

I think at 14 though it's a good life lesson in checking out these things for themselves Wink

Today seems to have caught a lot of people out.

We have two extras in our house this morning after desperate phone calls from friends who didn't realise until very last minute.

ExhaustedHousewife · 06/01/2025 15:55

I did this once and felt so guilty that I took them to the zoo for the day.

CeceliaImrie · 06/01/2025 16:12

I did too, luckily we live on the same road as the school so I twigged before putting uniform on DS!

crackofdoom · 06/01/2025 16:21

I think it's the rule that you have to do this at least at once in every child's school career. It certainly feels like you're being set up to fail sometimes.

(Although come to think of it I don't think I've missed an inset day. The day we turned up to a deserted playground was half term I think 😆)

crackofdoom · 06/01/2025 16:24

Also, it would be nice wouldn't it if local schools all collaborated to have inset schools on the same day? 🙄 It's always either DS1 off primary or DS2 off secondary in our house, never both at the same time.

NewYearNewDietAgain · 06/01/2025 16:28

I accidentally took my now adult DC to school on an inset day. Got them into uniform, made their packed lunches. Got them in the car. Spent 10 minutes sat in the school car park wondering why it was so quiet before I text a friend to check. 😁

GroovyChick87 · 06/01/2025 16:30

I've defo done this before so now I'm neurotic about checking. Better to send them when it's shut than for them to accidentally miss a day. No harm done, don't worry about it.

Justploddingonandon · 06/01/2025 16:51

I had got which child was on inset mixed up in my head until DS put me straight that he did indeed have school today. Tbf DD's school said they wouldn't have insets ( apart from today apparently) after they introduced a two week half term, whereas DS's has the normal number.

Hoppinggreen · 06/01/2025 16:57

I did it to DD once when she was Y8.
She realised and was about to come home when her form tutor saw her and took the piss

Newgreensofa · 06/01/2025 17:08

I was driving my three to school one morning when they asked “where are we going?” - I was driving the route for primary not secondary, years after the youngest had left 😂
Worst for me though (and I was talking about this last night) we had a lift rota with two friends when I was at secondary, it was a really snowy day and my dad’s turn. We had a car with a starting handle 🤭 (yes in the 80s) and he was so determined to prove his old car was better than “these modern things”. He battled on for an hour, passing stranded cars. At the school gate he said triumphantly “made it!” We got out, my friends looked daggers at me and sarcastically muttered “thanks”. Barely anyone else was there.

Sometimes that can't work with training days. By chance I happen to know that the training being done in DD3's school today is being done in DD4's tomorrow as an example.

Ursulla · 06/01/2025 17:16

Oh god I've done this twice. The second time, I had a full on flashback to the first, gawping at the eerily empty playground as the horror dawned on me.

Hate inset days.
