A walk of about 3/4 mil - fine or not?

I cna't get AA route finder to work so I am guessing it is about 3/4 mile from home to school. Am I being unrealistic to think a 4 3/4 year old and a 7 year old could do this. My son who is nearly 3 walks all the way there fine but goes in the buggy for the way back. Fine with me.

Fed up of driving all the way to school, fed up of driving for about 3 minutes to park and walk the rest and then strap them all in again for 3 more minutes.

weather permitting, should they be walking it and both ends of the day or just the once?

three-quarters of a mile? sounds totally doable to me - my 3.5 year old walks that daily. If she is v v tired or it is raining heavily we get the bus or use a buggy board. She also scoots loads, which really helps in terms of speed.

FairyMum · 01/05/2008 14:50

did you mis-type the distance? of course they could walk it.

Sounds utterly fine, my dds did 3/4 of a mile to preschool and school twice a day from the age of 3. Sometimes they scooted or cycled. We never ever used the car for that distance. They get better quickly with practice.

Unless you mean 3-4 miles, that might be a bit much.

did you mean about 3 or 4 miles? or three quarters of a mile?

tarantula · 01/05/2008 14:54

absolutely fine. Dd (4.4) walks, scoots or cycles (depends on mood) a mile each way to nursery each day and if she wants to go to the park on the way home (which is most days) its much further. No car here so no option not to walk regardless of weather.

choosyfloosy · 01/05/2008 14:58

If you meant 0.75, fine both ways. Consider bikes, or scooters if too rough roadwise.

Weather permitting?? Get them some decent waterproofs and wellies (and yourself) and enjoy. Nothing more fantastic than a fresh wet walk after a day stuffed into school.

Start working on what to spend your fuel savings on!

0.75 miles absolutely fine. Not just fine, good for you and them!

unknownrebelbang · 01/05/2008 16:06

We used to walk a mile most mornings and afternoons.

branflake81 · 01/05/2008 16:17

0.75 miles?? of course they can walk it!

The kids moan so much about it I just wanted to see if I was expecting too much of them. Walking it is!

DS (5) has walked about 2 miles since the age of 3ish really - took buggy for the way back though

You could do 0.75m within 20mins or so
