Baby fell of bed - panicking , what do I do????

Hi im looking for urgent advice im really panicking

My 1 year old fell of the bed about 20 minutes ago. Recently I've been letting him fall asleep in the bed and then I lift him into the cot as this is what's been working.

He was sitting up and fell back and hit his head a hard whack on the floor. He screamed really hard and fell asleep whilst screaming (it's way past his bed time so I think he just screamed himself to sleep) or if him falling asleep was due to the fall. He did gag and spit up saliva , no vomit. Don't know wether this was due to the fall or crying so hard.

He's now asleep and Im absolutely terrified. Obviously I'll keep an eye on him all night but it's hard as he's asleep so idk if he's in okay form. I don't know if he's supposed to sleep after hitting his head.

My local A&E is an absolute shambles atm. 10 hour wait for out of hours to ring back & up to 24 hour wait to be seen in A&E.

Any advice? My nerves are choking me.

Call 111 or take him to A&E I'm afraid. Not trying to scare you but I wouldn't take the risk with a hit on the head.

Eenameenadeeka · 20/12/2024 01:54

Sorry I'd get checked too

that was uncalled for

toycape · 20/12/2024 02:00

Get him checked OP, just in case. Give 111 a call xx

BobbyDazzler11 · 20/12/2024 02:05

A+e now, just incase !

NotMeForBakeoff · 20/12/2024 02:13

They will probably see you quicker with a baby. How is he?

Mamabear0202 · 20/12/2024 02:14

Definitely A&E. As he had a hit to the head and then fell asleep; this can be a sign of concussion.

i wouldn’t risk it. Babies and young children always get seen the quickest, they are a priority. It’s always better to get checked and it’s nothing than something worrisome occurring.

good luck.

Scissor · 20/12/2024 02:21

"Hard whack on the floor" get yourself to A&E ASAP he'll be a priority.
Don't waste time with phoning stuff until you're in the car on the way. They'll 100% tell you to go in and you'll have all bases covered.

watersoul · 20/12/2024 06:41

How is baby OP?

Overthebow · 20/12/2024 06:45

I hope he’s ok and you took him to A&E to be checked

MosaDiCello · 20/12/2024 06:53

@SwanSong1 Really uncalled for and not helpful at all.

TaggieO · 20/12/2024 06:54

That’s an A&e one so I hope you went. ?head injury in an infant wouldn’t have to wait as long as would be a priority

MosaDiCello · 20/12/2024 06:57

I would go it's always better to be safe than sorry. Young babies/children can deteriorate quickly. I completely understand your concern regarding A&E its a state of all sorts right now but inform them that he fell asleep and had a bit of spit up that should move things along.

A&E - similar thing happened to my son as a baby. I was absolutely devastated and it happened so quickly. Rushed him immediately to a&e. You should definitely go, if you haven't already

ChronicallySleepy · 20/12/2024 07:07

Hope your little one is okay, at that age and especially if he fell asleep very quickly after and was gagging I'd go straight to A&E. Hopefully you're there and got seen quickly

iIy · 20/12/2024 11:54

Hi everyone. Thanks for your replies, I really panicked.

I rung out of hours and was told to to A&E immediately. Was triaged after 20 minutes and then was told wait time to see a doctor is up to 10 hours as one dr on shift and he's going between A&E & another ward (my a&e is extremely understaffed and under a lot of pressure atm)

Baby was sleeping until went into A&E , he woke and was full of smiles, waving at everyone in A&E, kept giggling and babbling, was trying to climb the chairs and was having a great time! This brought a lot of relief.

I left after 2 hours as A&E was packed out the door, people were laying on the floor. There was drunk people shouting and being detained by police.

I felt extremely guilty for leaving but baby came around and showed no signs of concussion.

10 hour wait time to be seen for a baby is ridiculous. Baby went home had a good sleep and is up now happy and okay.

Glad all is well. Smile

Overthebow · 20/12/2024 13:51

So glad he’s ok. 10 hours wait for a baby is ridiculous. Do you not have a separate children’s A&E at your hospital? Wait times at ours are usually a lot shorter than at the adult one, we were seen within 1 hour recently.

ElfieGudrun · 20/12/2024 14:00

Glad your baby is ok. My eldest fell from her cot when she was a similar age, slightly younger. I didn’t realise she had grown strong enough to climb. She was and is fine. Things happen. All any of us can do is try our best to prevent it and deal with it when it does. Nobody is perfect. Please don’t dwell on this and let it affect your confidence as a parent.

There's no bloody need for that. Why are people on here so horrible sometimes?
