What do preteen girls wear?

I have a DD who is 11 and I want to get her some new clothes but I didn’t really know what ‘the youth’ wear nowadays! Up until now she has worn long t-shirts and leggings with trainers. Are there any ‘must-have’ wardrobe items she should have? I was thinking maybe jeans but I’m not sure whether to get skinny or wide-leg. Then maybe a skirt and a few crop-top style t-shirts with some converse shoes? The young girls I see locally wear mainly sports leggings with a hoody and Nike trainers so maybe I should just stick to that but it seems very dull! Help please!

Tbh you are very brave even contemplating buying clothes without your tweens approval. Get her to send you some links of stuff she likes instead.

My DD (12) lives in Nike pro leggings, Nike t shirts and white fox hoodies. They all look like little clones but that’s what they all wear.

good luck

Thank you! I have asked her what she would like but she just says she doesn’t know. She’s never really been fussed about clothes and been happy to wear what I’ve bought her.

Well, just take her shopping and she can pick what she likes - not difficult is it?

It really depends on the child, some won't be seen dead in leggings, other live in them
...

So just take her and see what she wants.

I would say some loose fit jeans (baggy is on trend if she’s into trends) and cropped tops to go with or a nice sweatshirt/hoodies. I’m not sure how much you’re looking to spend but athleisure brands like Nike/Adidas are always quite safe.
I see a lot of that age group in Nike air force 1’s but adidas gazelle/sambas are different and more on stylish imo. Then converse or doc martens are effortlessly cool and timeless too, if that’s more of her alternative style. ASOS is ideal for any of these things.
Hope I’ve somewhat helped, I’ve worked as a stylist for many years so love talking about clothes haha.

What do her friends wear?

DD was firmly alternative at 11 and has stayed that way. But there are swathes of girls who dress in different ways.

My 10 year old is Nike pro leggings, or wide leg jeans or joggers with a crop top or cropped jumper. She's currently eyeing up a leggings and long sleeve crop set in new look and a puffa body warmer.
