Struggling with Guilt,Unable to Afford Our Usual Summer Holiday

I'm feeling really guilty because I can't afford a summer holiday this year due to money issues. For the past seven years, we've always managed to go somewhere, even if it was just to Haven. It wasn’t far, but at least it was a break from home. This year, the prices are just sky-high. I even thought about going during school time, but knowing my luck, we'd end up with a massive fine. I suggested we do some day trips instead, but she really wants to go to theme parks, and even those prices are crazy. I just feel like I've let her down.

Sorry to hear you are struggling. How old is your daughter and where abouts are you in the country.

I wouldn't have dreamed of questioning my parents plans, at age 9. We did what was offered and didn't demand otherwise. It wouldn't have occurred to us that we could.

It's very perplexing. Just tell her it's not on this year, don't be apologetic.

I really wouldn't worry. The only time I went on 'holiday' as a child was to family and that was rare.

I have grown up fairly normal and can take or leave holidays generally.

I'm not convinced children are that bothered by lots of travelling, waiting around and sleeping in strange places rather than enjoying being at home.

In short... holidays are not that necessary.

Day trips are absolutely fine but don't ask her where she wants to go if budget is tight and always pack a picnic to cut down on costs Wink
