DS 2.4 has had a rather surprise start to potty training. i wasnt going to start yet but had the potty lying around for him to get used to and he was using it whenb he had naked time at nights. then on friday morning DH had left his nappy off so i thought i would leave it off all day and see what happens. anyway it appears DS has trained himself as he was happy using the potty for wees and poos. we did have a few accidents but i soon worked out he was being lazy when wearing his pull ups and just doing it in them instead of asking to go on the potty. aftyer a few days of bare bum we have now had his first day in undies and no accidents yet. The thing is, he still has a 2 to 3 hour nap in the afternoon. i know he will be in nappies at night for a bit but do i put a nappy on him for his nap or do i leave him without and use mattress protection to see what happens? i dont want to put him backwards but i also dont want to knock his confidence if he wees the bed.
any advice gratefully received

With dd1 I would put a nappy on her for her nap, then take it off right after. Tbh, it all sort of coincided with moving from her cot and dropping her nap so it wasn't an issue for long at all.

Dd2 dropped her naps long before she started potty training.

use a rubber sheet or pad thing, keep nappy off. then you'll get more of an idea what to do at night. ds also did this surprise potty training about same age and was dry at night by 2.9.

it is a bit confusing, for quite a while i was leaving nappies off when i did bedtime and dh was putting them on the other half of the week!

ok, so we have just had our first poo accident in pants. he didnt seem bothered that hed done it in his pants but i suppose hes used to doing it in nappies. i just calmly put it in the potty and explained that was where we do poos. is that the right approach and i suppose i just carry on as i am and take things slowly. its all new to me.

yes that sounds ok. are you doing wild enthusiasm for success? has he tried the loo yet?

Put a pad thing under him and do it at night too - we used to just wake DS up before we went to bed to wee - I would say we have had less than 5 accidents in all the time he has been trained - it is easier if you do both together rather than let them wear a nappy or pull ups at night.

thanks for all the advice. i am doing enthusiasm and stickers and he has done wees on the loo so far. he is saying no sometimes when i ask him if he needs a wee so i am not pushing it and saying ok but you know where the potty is etc
