what sort of toys do 9month olds like?

hi, dd hasnt really got many toys, poor lil baby!

so i want to get her some more, could you give me a few tips or ideas please?
what do yours or did your like at 9-12 months sort of age?

hammering and banging seem to be favourites at the moment. how about a drum or one of those things where you hammer wooden pegs.

DS2 is 10 months and loving his brothers toy garage. He stands at it and puts cars in and out and then starts banging them on the top.

How about putting together a treasure basket style thing, fill a tin or basket with all sorts of household items, different materials, glass, ceramics, whisks, all sorts of stuff.

oh yes banging is popular with dd too.
oh yeah toy piano, yes ill get dd one of those, yep and a cardboard box.
oh yes i nned to get some bricks too.
oh yeah i could do a treasure basket, with whicks and wooden spoons etc.
good idea about the tunnel too.

dd seems to like small things aimed at older children. she has this ski jump penguin thing in the bath 12 months plus and she loves it.

The definitely like the stuff for older children. Metal cars are a great hit.

The cardboard boxes drive me a bit mad around the house all the time, but they and DH love them.

Pots and wooden spoons?

Another annoying one is to take all the cushions off the sofa and make an all terrain crawling area. They love it, i can't stand it.(can you imagine what my living room looks like on a sunday now? boxes and cushions everywhere!)

I noticed in ELC they had a wooden board with beads that sort of slide around it, that looks good.

oh yeah, i know what you mean, i could perhaps get dd some musical instuments too.

ikwym about the baby stuff everywhere, i used to be a right tidy freak, liked everything uncluttered minamal lol i dont think i can really achieve that look anymore
oh well at least it more homely this way lol
ill try the carboard boxes, do you make door into them or anything. the cat also loves a good old cardboard box too so he will probably try and join in till he sees dd, then he will probably run away !!

a big box of tissues to grab out of the box then throw around and rip up with glee!

dd is a right one for that, loves eatting magazines too!!

I have a strange 9mo who hardly ever puts things in her mouth - very odd but makes my life easier

Another firm favourite is any remote control - in fact just about anything that she is not meant to have!

DS1 wasn't into putting things in his mouth at all. DS2 however puts everything in there. If you touch his lips he goes into a weird trance. I probably shouldn't do it to him, but it's fascinating.

i have an old calculator and mobile phone which get brought out when he's in the mood for the remote.

Oh I'm glad you've had one like that too! Makes the whole finger food thing a bit tricky when they don't automatically stuff it in their mouth

yes, definitely made for a problem with food. he also doesn't like touching anything sticky. he's 3 now and he's a really fussy eater.
i can see in DS2 how different he is right from the beginning. he's been eating chunks of melon today. his brother wouldn't have touched it never mind got it near his mouth.

shakers, noisy toys are defintely good for baby, although not good for mummies!

Brightly coloured soft material building blocks with shapes and pictures on them

a first ride on/push along toy?good for practising cruising/walking when she is ready for that, and can push her on it until then.

Books - cardboard/felt/musical/touchy feely

Bowl filled with water and wooden spoons/plastic cups/plastic bowl - used to put this on living room floor (with towel underneath) for DD and she loved playing, splashing. Would sit there for ages. gets a bit wet though!

Stacking cups. Ds1 played with those endlessly at that age.

ELC bight stacking cups, great for bashing the highchair with and fun in the bath.
Also the "Thats not my train/puppy/monster" etc books, touchy/feely. DS2 (10 months) loves his, esp the monster one.

we have quite a few books the its not my kitten,but the stacking cups would be great.

think what ill do is, get a couple of toy boxes then i can vary the toys round so dd doesnt get bored seeing the same ones everyday.

yes p, ill post some pics when its done, im about half way now oh that is nice, very smart good for 30 quid too. and can see a older baby having great fun wheeling things around in that too.

My son loves stacking cups - fav toy! Oh and the Thats not my books as well. I must have read them all to him about 100 times. He also has a BIG thing about balls, will chasea tennis ball around for ages!!!

He also loves my TV, SKY box, telephone wire, hairedryer......

Yes lb the basket is also enjoyed by DS1 who is 3 and pushes it round the room. Also you can roll it away out of sight at the end of the day if you prefer to have toys out of sight in the evenings.

my kids favourite toys at 9months:

DD- tissues, pulling them out of the box, shredding them and rolling around the floor in the mess she'd made

DS- hair,to pull and suck, mine, his sisters,the cats, any unsuspecting visitors

yes i do prefer the toys out of sight in the evenings but these days i just think sod it, theyll be out again in a few hours !lol
but i will start putting them away in toy boxes, as i say so i can vary the toys alot.
she doeds love throwing the cat his ball, not sure he enjoys it so much though lol

musical/shaking toys (or dont need to buy, just fill old plastic pot with lentils and sellotape lid on...)
a shapesorter, tho at this age they dont sort shapes, but they do like just dropping them into the box. anything you can take out of something and put back in again. a big plastic box filled with lots of things with different textures.
ds at this age was crazy about a brightly coloured squeezy ball
anything that lights up and sings irritating songs from vtech (we have a secondhand vtech stroller that lies flat so they can just hit the buttons which was popular from about 7 months and still going strong now to walk with - most longlived toy we've had i think)
stacking boxes/cups - early learning centre stacking boxes with interesting things on each box were great. ikea do stacking cups for a quid that have holes in so can be used for pouring in bath.
crawling across the lawn eating mud
anything shiny and metal from the kitchen - colanders, sieves, graters, saucepans - especially if it can be banged together.
