Getting laxido into a child with severely restricted diet

Prefacing this with I'm at my wits end. Our daughter needs to undergo a disimpaction regime, she is so constipated. We've been battling constipation for months (undoubtedly largely due to her restricted diet) and it is a nightmare getting any medication into her. We did day 1 today and getting 2 sachets in her was horrendous. I have no idea how we're going to do this. She needs to have 4 tomorrow.

For context, she is 2yr 8mo, was very difficult to wean, has a very restrictive diet and is awaiting assessment for ASD. She is highly observant and intelligent, is an exceptional communicator, spots any manipulation a mile off, does not respond to bribery and it is incredibly difficult to get her to do anything new or different, or try anything new. She is generally not a great drinker but does drink milk and water. With milk she can taste the difference if I make the laxido mix and add it. I have to dilute water so much for her to take it, there is no way she's going to get that volume in. Today I tried mixing into squash, bribing her to drink this with choc buttons, explaining why she needs to have it, distracting with putting a video on, using the calpol syringe to squirt it in. We got there eventually but it was so difficult and stressful with lots of upset.

Any advice welcomed from people who've struggled with the same. We're having behavioural issues I think due to the constipation and she's so distressed by it, so we really need to get on top of this.

We had multiple episodes of having to do this. I mixed it in a third of a glass of squash (as little as could dissolve in) and then just upped the other liquids through the day. Also would put couple of sachets in little water if need be... anything to get it into her.
I feel your struggle, hope this helps

Just an update on this. We've made some real progress, largely thanks to some of the great suggestions on this thread ❤️

We are on day 4 of the regime and I've managed to get the required amounts in her each day. We're up to 6 per day now and safe to say things are moving! Best solutions have been:

  • making up a concentrated amount with water then adding a bit of squash so it's like syrup and syringing in, followed by lots of water
  • homemade yoghurt ice lollies with laxative added
  • homemade yoghurt pouches with laxative added (she's always declined ship bought ones before so I was surprised she took to them)
  • a water bottle with a sachet sufficiently diluted she doesn't notice and getting that all in her during the course of the day
  • adding to porridge, pasta sauce, mashed potato and the one type of soup she'll eat

I can't tell you how much better all your posts made me feel and I have felt so much more positive. She is much more cheery and is clearly in less discomfort. Hopefully we'll be able to move to a maintenance dose soon. Thank you again.

My DD is own the same, although she is older. You are absolutrly right OP - it mist be mixed with the correct quantity of water before diluting further and addind flavour, or it won’t work properly. The paediatric consultant looking after my DD was so clear on this fact. Luckily for me, DD will happily take it with squash. One thing though - my DD usually has movicol. We had to move to Laxido for the last prescription and DD said the ‘squash tastes funny’ although she still drank it. So might be worth asking for movicol rather than laxido in case the taste is slightly different?
