2yr old still not talking

Background
Had 2yr review, my boy is doing well in all areas. Low on speech (the score just before assessment is advised) and we said we would see how he got on over next few months and maybe do the assessment (although HV was happy with how he was progressing).

He's never been to nursery and is about to start next week and I'm hoping all the new interactions and socialising with other children might help his speech.

He can say lots of words individually, not always accurately. Started to try and say 2 words phrases 'bic bic please' is a common favourite now!

I guess I'm just worried that other things are gona pop up once he starts nursery and it's going to seem like a big issue. I fully believe kids develop at their own speed and we are very attentive parents.

Any advice for an over-worried, anxious mum?

Hi there do you have an update some months on from this post?

My son turns 2 this month and whilst I’m not hugely worried about his speech I am a little anxious over it not being quite where it should be. I have a nephew who is a week older than my son and he speaks amazingly well, I guess that’s where my anxiety comes from.

When I add up the words he uses often I’d say he says roughly 30ish words, can put a few two word phrases together, manages ‘here it/he/she is’ but that’s about it. His understanding is really good, he points, engages with you when he plays, loves his little baby sister and watching/playing with other children etc so there’s no other real concerns, just the fact I see so many two year olds that seem to speak soooo much more.

Wow. This is crazy reading back!
My son has come on leaps and bounds. Zero concerns now.
It really is the whole, they will just do it when they’re ready. It doesn’t take away your worry and anxiety but wow, I wish I could tell myself last year to relax and let him flourish.

His speech just developed really rapidly from more words to then beginning to say sentences of his own to the point I can have little conversations now with him. He turns 3 in March and it really just is worlds apart from where he was with his speech at 2 already.

Be patient and try not to worry. Speak to your HV about your concerns. They did reassure me when I spoke to them a few months after his 2 year review to check how he was progression wise.

all the best x
